Rebuild in 2017
I need to rebuild my EJ22T shortblock and I wanted to get some opinions. I want to rebuild for reliability. The engine had 250k miles when pulled. I'm going to bore it out 0.04 because I have to overbore for the Wiseco pistons anyway. I'm not going to run high boost and the extra displacement should be good for low end. Oil jet had fallen out and been damaged, but I found a replacement.
--Crank
Hopefully reuse existing. Machinist recommended against touching it.
--Pistons & Rings
Wiseco looks like the only option. I understand that these will up the compression ratio. Anything to worry about there? Still non-interference right?
--Head Gasket
OEM that comes with engine gasket set.
--Rods
I'm thinking I should buy new rods due to the engine's age and mileage. Looks like a set of Manley rods (14024-4) are $352 online? Cheaper options? Does anyone have the part number for a 130.5mm STI rod? Machinist recommended using upgraded ARP rod bolts.
--Heads
Hopefully as little as possible. Prep them for gasket. My machinist recommend gasket matching them for better flow. May have him do that depending on his bid. Worth doing anything else?
--Bearings
King Bearings were recommended by the machinist. Not that expensive.
--Bolts
The OEM head bolts are stretch bolts right? How about the case bolts? I'm thinking that I'll replace with OEM as the ARP kits add another $400 to the build
Anything else I need to consider?

Re: Rebuild in 2017
JE makes 2.2 pistons as well. I am not clear if they are the new strutted FSR design though (which are really great). Edit: not
Looks like cometic still makes a 22t headgasket. People seem to like the OEM ones though. There is the original 22t graphite design as well as the newer MLS part for the later 2.2.
When it comes to rods bolts, if you just add ARPs with a higher torque setting, the journal often ends up out of round. So a set of rods that actually comes with arp2000s would be the best bet.
Case bolts are the same deal- if you put in ARPs the main journals end up out of round. So stick with OEM case bolts torqued to oem spec. You can re-use them, but if they are very corroded some new ones would be a good idea.
Head bolts can also be re-used if they are in good condition, but getting some ARP studs would be worthwhile. E- the sohc head bolts are different but arp makes a set.
If you are interested I can send you a quote for any/all of the parts mentioned. I can usually be pretty competitive.

Sohc head bolts are shorter so if you plan on not reusing yours keep that in mind

Just my 2 cents about your heads if you are already planning on getting new pistons I would ditch your sohc heads if its in your budget I saw someone recently in the parts shed selling some heads and manifold http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=55901

I may do that down the road. For now, it's just too much additional expense. Engine is going into a Vanagon with a SubaruGears WRX transmission.

I just realised I measured the block bolts vs the head bolts so dont quote me on the length just yet I will measure the correct bolts and see if they are the same length tomorrow

Re: Rebuild in 2017
And ARP does make an SOHC set of head studs. On the website it does say 99+ only, but I am reading they fit the older engines just fine. There are a number of people around here that have used them.
Case bolts should all be the same.

Yeah, I used the head studs on my motor rebuild. You can see pictures/part number here.

Re: Rebuild in 2017
Forged internals parts list for posterity. Ended up going with the 0.02" oversized pistons per machinist recommendation. Stock crank was fine so it will be reused. Also going to reuse the head bolts and a few of the case bolts. The internal case bolts were fairly corroded, so those will be replaced. Again, the aim here is to rebuild for longevity, smooth idle and maintaining non-interference configuration.

Were you able to get the OEM oil jets? They've been NLA and out of stock for a while now I thought.

UAE supplier. Shipping was cheap. Amazing right?

Interesting. Between several board members we bought their remaining stock last year. That's neat that somewhere, somehow they have sourced some more.

I've purchased some hard to find items there before. That's awesome if they have more oil squirters. They were showing zero available last year.

Have you gotten the oil squirters yet and have them in hand?
