Were are you going to mount your heater Core Ciper

Post by georryan »

In the previously locked thread you mentioned that you were putting a radiator up front, but going mount your heater core (used for the AWIC setup on your car) somewere else. I was curious were you were going to mount it.

I wanted to get a small unit to act as a pre-cooler that was close to the AWIC itself. I looked round for a while and couldnt find anything that was right.

I was stripping a legacy before sending it to the junkyard and by chance I decided to see how our vent system works. The heater core is very well built and compact. It was perfect!

If I ever get my #$^%ing fiberglass hood  :x I want to split the split the scoop. A small section will still goto the chimney, while attached to the top of the AWIC will be a channel which will touch the hood when closed. Air entering the scoop will flow along the top of the AWIC and down to the drivers side. Im still figuring out which wires to extend and which to attach to the engine butthe area above the steering column is pretty much clear.

The Heater core will sit between the engine and strut tower with the air channel attached. Air will dump into/behind the crossmember. Since Im now running a turbo exhaust there is no heat producing items in that area.

Understand that I still plan to run a large radiator up front, if the heater core drops the water temperature by five degrees Im happy.
You may be thinking "wouldnt it be easier to mount it in the soop or above the AWIC?" No, problem is that it would be the highest point in the system and bleeding air would be damn near impossible. The way I describe it mounts the core at an angle so air can escape and the AWIC cap is still the highest point.

Good point. Let me know how it works out. I plan on going with an AWIC, also. I'm curious, how do you plan on doing the wiring for the water pump? Are you just going to leave it cycling all the time, or are you going to setup some kinds of temp sensor that will cycle it at a specified temp? Are you going to have a manual switch or just have it automatically wired?

I would like to not have a switch just because in the case that anyone else drives my car (as unoften as that may be) I won't have to worry that they will run into a problem because I'm not there to monitor things.

A lil off the subject but I recently had a bit of a problem with my Legacy, when I turned on the heater I could smell coolant and steam would come out of the vents. I'm guessing its the heater core, anyone else? Ciper you got a good heater core you want to sell?

Wow, that sort of sucks. The heater core is pretty far up there. I think the only way to get it is to remove the entire dash.

If I was you Id go bypass the unit NOW so your coolant doesnt run low. Then when you get a replacement put it back into the system. I dont really want to sell the one I got. Your up in Sacramento, plenty of Legacy at the junk yard and Subuar/Suzuki/Kia.

yeah I go up there a lot, I think I used to see you like once every week or every other week up by the old papa johns on walnut and el camino (used to work there), right by the "tanning salon". If not it was a different talon, but that's not really a popular car. Either way, welcome aboard
