Turbo Legacy Automatic Transmission Alternatives

Post by kyledooley »

Just wondering if anyone has had luck replacing their Turbo legacy A/T with anything other than an turbo Legacy trans? Automatic that is.

I have a 1992 and it is impossible to find the trans for a decent price.

Does anyone know of a way to tell if any other/newer subaru A/Ts will work with my 92 TCU? I've been told that pre-98 should be okay, but nobody has confirmed that for me.

I'm pretty handy, so if it is a matter of changing a couple of TCU connector pins or something like that, I'm good to go. But I want to hear what people are doing when their Auto boxes are crapping out other than going with a manual.

Thanks,

Kyle

90-99 is the first generation. I know for sure that at least 93-95 impreza transmissions will work and 90-97 legacy transmissions will work.

You can swap another transmission in, the only difference with yours is that its slightly stronger than what the other cars got (similar to the SVX). The important part is matching the differential ratio.

Some of the TC look different but I have found no reason that any TC couldnt be switched. I used a TC from a 1.8 liter on my EJ22.
