will this transmission bolt right in???
i have a 4eat that wont go into 3rd or 4th and im afraid it may be the tranny, so i can get a 4eat from a 96 legacy 2.5 with 110K miles thats good for $600 up the street from me. would this tranny be a bolt in and would it work with my tcu (i understand its not as strong but i wont be hardcore racing it or anything)? if so is there anything i should replace on the tranny before i but it in? any of the solenoids or anything? and if it would work do you know the exact torque specs for the brake bands? any help you could give on what would bolt in would be great... it might be a great sticky to list what transmissions from what subarus will interchange with eachother, it seems many people have these issues. id like to be able to get my toy back on the road for this spring.

I believe all ej-series trannies are interchangable, at least physically. Electronically might be different.

I'm on First and First. How can the same street intersect with itself? I must be at the nexus of the universe.

There will be a model number on the transmission, which can be decoded to tell you what it is. The gear ration is going to be very important, of course, but concern over the electonics is also justified.

yea unfortunately i dont know if ill be able to find a 3.9 without it being from a turbo legacy and those arent the easiest things to find. ill just have to go with a 4.11 and get the rear diff too. i figure the nice thing with the 2.5 is it should be a little stronger then the 2.2 tranny (probly not though).

You can get a 4EAT out of a WRX for around 1k if you look around long enough.
The WRX has a 3.9 Final drive.
Also check JDM trannies.
Why not swap to a manual tranny? Those are available in the JDM for pretty cheap if you go used.
You could always do a rebuild on the current tranny. Install a shift kit and a tranny-cooler, and you'll be gold.
