Question on Oil Cooler

Post by Wedge »

Hi folks. I was under the impression that the stock oil cooler only came in the 91 model??
Also, would it cause any problem if I route a line straight from the waterpump to it? (Instead of using that reservoir tank)
Thanks for your help.

Here is a pic of it, on my hybrid rebuild.

Yes, the only Legacy Turbo that came with an oil cooler was the 91.

The 91 water pump has an extra nipple for it; the coolant filler tank isn't involved at all.

Ah ok. So the line from the waterpump, the left one on this pic :

....goes straight to the oil cooler?

As for the OTHER nipple, I'm just going to seal that one up.

Yeah, pretty much. Well, to be annoyingly precise, it goes through a short hose to a hard pipe, and then at the other end goes through another hose to the oil cooler. :)

Wait a minute -- why are you sealing up any nipples?

The one on the left is for the oil cooler. The upper one on the right (the smaller one) is for the coolant filler tank (or can go directly to the turbo if you're not gonna use that tank). The lower one on the right is for the heater.

Are you not planning to water-cool your turbo or something?

Turbo already gets fed from the lines going in to the heater core. (Thats how the Ludespeed kit is setup). I really don't wanna change it now, since it's been working fine. :) Thanks for your help!

Ah, I gotcha... You're welcome.

This isn't an EJ22T, then, I presume? Or have you plugged the coolant fitting on the passenger side head?

Oops! Sorry I didn't clarify at first what it is, (or will be).

Basically a rebuilt 91 EJ22T block, bored out to 2240cc, with custom Ross pistons 8.5:1 in it. I'll be using my EJ25 SOHC heads on it, which those have been redone with a 3angle valve job, cobb turbo cams, and their high lift valvetrain (stiffer springs & titanium retainers). In between it has a set of Cometic headgasket.

I'm hoping it's a pretty potent engine. :D

Just a reminder that the 91 turbo uses the same water pump as the usdm 02+ WRX.

Look at the upgrade oil cooler kit from the dealer, it has the replacement thermo neck with the extra nipple.

Going by the picture, Wedge has a 91 BC / WRX water pump.

The replacement thermostat cover is meant for non-turbos. I asked about this in another thread, but will a non-turbo thermostat cover fit on a turbo?
