Straight off the downpipe?

Post by BAC5.2 »

I have a friend who brought up a "good" idea.

His idea:

Run an electronic cut-off on my exhaust.

Leave it stock from the downpipe back (replace the DP with a TXS one), and I'll pass the sniffer test.

Hit a switch, and open the gate and I'll be running right off the downpipe.

What do you think about this idea?

Negative side effects besides LOTS of noise?

Would you recomend doing this or just doing a complete TXS TBE and run 1 cat?

Thanks!

Ah, the old "cutout" trick.

I don't see any real problems with this aside from the flapper getting worn down and letting gas flow through both outlets.

You think I'll run into any problems with the 5-oh around here?

I'm kind of weary having a cutout and just letting the exhaust flow out from under the car.

Me = no like CO2 poisioning.

Perhaps you want to run a splitter pipe, so that when you plan to dump your exhaust you can expell it to the lower right of your car.

Actually, upon reading this again I'm thinking you're a little confused with what the exhaust actually does. Does the Turbo XS DP come with a cat? Placing the cutout after the DP (assuming the cat's in the DP) will open up the exhaust a little more, but you might as well just get a full turbo back!

The backbox/muffler does NOT deal with emissions. It only quiets the exhaust down. The catalytic converter is what deals with emissions.

BTW, DLC got away with running NO CATS and still passed emissions in CO. Not sure how stringent the laws are up there, tho.

That's bull. I hear that in Colorado they are planning to do away with emissions sometime in the near future.

Boost - Sorry about the confusion.

I will be replacing my stock downpipe with a cat-less TurboXS downpipe.

I will have a cat after the downpipe that the exhaust will be stock from the cat back.

The cutout will be right at the downpipe.

When open, I will be, effectively, catless. When closed, I will be running through the stock exhaust.

The only real advantage to this I can see is cost.

I would rather have a full TBE, and have it setup similar to a Y pipe, when open, all exhaust flows straight through the exhaust with no cat's. When open, the exhaust is diverted through a pipe through a cat, then back into the main exhaust line.

What do you think the cost difference will be between an Electronic Cutout, and a full TXS TBE?

REALLY? I need to move.

BAC5.2, I have no idea what the prices are for either of those two components. Sorry.
