Thinking of buying a Legacy..

Post by Spiral »

Hi all!

Im currently looking into selling my current car (86 Nissan 300zx) and getting myself a 1991 Legacy, you can see the ad Here I was just wondering what you guys would suggest I look for on my testdrive.

The price seems right, and I dont think 120k miles is too bad? It is an automatic transmission though, so that might be bad? There is also This legacy as well, but the black one is far sexier.

I'll write down all of your suggestions and report back with the answers, and you guys can help me decide if I should go for it, or stay the hell away..

I dont really know much about these cars, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Both look real nice. I don't know if LSDs were standard that year or not, but you could check the rear diff to find out - it will be a little silver sticker on the back that says LSD (or at least the older cars had that).

Regular car stuff - make sure all electrics work, interior's decent (pretty robust like everything else), check for signs of accident damage or signs or serious abuse. Check the CV joint boots for tears, see that it runs and shifts well, coolant for oil, etc. These cars are only just broken-in at 100k.

I don't know where the 604 area code is, but check for rust in the usual places around wheel wells and sills. These cars usually rust at the base of the front fender behind the front wheel. Usually this is only the cheap replaceable fender and underneath will more than likely be fine. The rear wheel arch also likes to start where it meets the rear bumper as there's a little shelf in there for mud to collect. This will usually not be serious aither as these cars are extremely well galvanized - lightyears beyond older Subarus and well beyond their contemporaries even from Japan also. This is the extent of what I usually see up here in New England - areas where there is no snow I would guess would have nothing at all for rust.

Thanks a lot steve, the cars are located in Vancouver BC.

I was kind of thinking that 100k miles isnt too bad for these cars, since from what I've read they are basically rally cars :)

edit: I've been doing a bit more reading, and are all of the legacies with hoodscoops turboed? (Black car ad doesnt mention turbo)

Spiral,

That black car is deffinately a 91 Turbo,
You can tell from the scoop, wheels and bumper.

I recently bought one with 215,000km's on the clock for 3500$ here in New brunswick, just to give you a price comparison.

The autos aren't as fun as the manuals I'm guessing but fun nevertheless.

I just bought my 94 Turbo Legacy 5MT with 94k miles on it for $3400 USD.

The turbo cars are definately fun :)

Whoa another Vancouverite. Funny thing is I test drove the white one on the weekend. It was pretty patched up, the rear diff. was LOUD, it had 193 xxxkms on it, and my 1990 N/A sedan with 233 xxxkms on it is waaayyyyyy faster. The salesman was rather decent though, not pushy (he understood when I said I was looking to trade an almost identical car because his was turbo), and the best part is when we came back from the test drive (during which he was looking over my car) he was more than willing to give me a flat trade. We said thanks but no thanks in the end.

Good luck with your search, these really are great machines.

I guess I'll wait for another one to show up then, because loudness isn't high on my priorities.

I'll have to focus on putting my 300zx back together first.

Unfortunatley, these cars fetch a real premium here in Vancouver. I saw a few '93 turbo sedans on the same day. They all had between 100xxx and 150xxx kilometers, and the guys were asking between $8,000 and $11,000 for them.
