Turbo scoop on a '90 Legacy sedan...?

Post by elkaboom »

Hey guys, I was wondering if it's possible to put scooped hood on a non-turbo model sedan?
I haven't seen too many Subaru's in my area, much less an older turbo sedan, but I was curious wether or not they (turbo charged models dating back to 1990) were even scooped, and if so, could I retro-fit a turob hood on my non-turbo Legacy or will "modifications" be necessary?
Also, I'm interested in putting a stock rear spoiler on my sedan. I realize this will require a little bolt on action and some re-wiring, but can I order a spoiler factory direct?
Thanks in advance!

Spend the time finding the engine to match.

Don't mind ciper, he's our resident Gear head.

But I do agree, you could fit it but it would require cutting. it's not worth it in my opinion..

Save your bucks and get the turbo engine instead of the look...

A hood from a 91 turbo would be a direct bolt-on; it wouldn't require any cutting.

All Legacy turbos came with scoops from the factory.

You probably could order a spoiler from a dealer but an aftermarket spoiler of similar shape would probably be cheaper.

I agree with ciper and QuickDrive, though. What's the point of these two modifications? With the same amount of money you could noticeably improve your car's performance. Just spend it on tires instead!

What exactly would the scoop be doing on your N/A? It's not cooling anything.

Hood direct bolt on, getting a complete trunk lid/spoiler from a junkyard would be less expensive than getting an aftermarket spoiler of similar shape.

I see no point in doing the former, but the latter I can understand for looks.

LOL! Just like my old 97GT . . . and the 98-01RSs . . . Seems very "subaru-like" . . . .hehe. OEM-rice, if you ask me.

A friend of mine used to say DSMs came from the factory "pre-riced."

Think of the STi and EVO...

But I want the look....

Post by elkaboom »

Wow! Thanks for the speedy replies -most impressive. :D
Anyway, what I'm after primarily is the look of the scooped hood and "spoiled trunk lid. It just looks better with than without imho.
Also, my ej22 is very well maintained; with 155k, she still runs strong with plenty of pep to spare. However, the cost of turbocharging and or replacing the non-turbocharged engine with a turbo charged replacement would be cost prohibitive to put it mildly.
legacy777's car is almost exactely what I'd like to reproduce. The scoop and spoiler just add a little something extra that really makes the car sparkle.
Assuming I can acquire the parts/mods I'm after I'd like to paint it as well (I was thinking that lovely shade of blue I've seen on late model WRX's), but after speaking with several body shops, I think I'll opt for the original "Misty Dawn" (metallic grey). I was quoted almost 3000.00 for a different color altogether (the blue I'm so fond of) or 2200-2700.00 for the original color.
Anyway, I can't tell you how much I love my Soob, and the main reason I want her to look sharp is simply because I plan on driving it for many years.
Does anyone know of a good aftermarket/factory original body panel and/or parts cataloge?
Thanks again!

Oh, and for the most part, my car is identical to Legacy777's (LS AWD), so if I can get it to look half as good, I'll be ecstatic.

Hmm, close to the same price you could do a stock turbo conversion for.

The only hood you could use would be a 91 turbo hood. Id say if you really want to just modify your existing hood to add a scoop of your choice because 91 turbo hoods are pretty hard to find.

The spoiler is a pretty simple add-on. I picked mine up off of ebay for $55 shipped. Its aftermarket but the factory style. Took all of an hour tops to install if that long.

I"ll sell you a spoiler and scoop for a decent price if you're willing to try the scoop mod.

Send me a PM we'll talk numbers.

You should try to find a stock turbo front bumper too, I think most would agree it looks way better than a n/a one.

I like the center mounted roof antennae's too. It just looks more symmetrical.
