(dead horse) Impreza RS scoop mod

Post by dscoobydoo »

Ok, I know there have been a billion scoop mod posts, but hell, got to get my .02 cents in. Has anyone tried to modify a RS scoop to fit our factory turbo scoop housing? I know there was a group run for a turbo modded hood that ran afoul, so I don't think that will go again. I have done fiberglassing, so I don't see why you could not get an aftermarket RS scoop and cut and shape it to fit our openings for more flow. I know it is about 2 inches too wide and long, but a section from the middle can be removed, and the back scoop wall can be re-contoured and cut to fit our openings. I am going to try this come may, so any help/suggestions would be great.

Instead of modifying the RS scoop, it would be easier and cheaper to just form a scoop out of foam and custom glass one.

What can I say, I like the angle and look of the RS scoop. Besides, I am not the greatest at doing original templates and models, but it's hella easy to modify existing parts

The work you'd have to do to make this work, you're basically rebuilding it anyway. You'll be cutting the rear and narrowing it out.

Your money, but I think it'd be easier to make the mold yourself.

I'm installing a 2.5 RS front bumper and hood scoop in a week or so. I'll be cutting the hood to accomodate the scoop, though. It's really not that difficult. Just make a template, apply it to the hood and cut.

I personally don't like the look of the wrx scoop on our cars. The wrx is more "rounded" whereas we have a more "square" shape. I'm picking up a wrx hood scoop shroud around lunchtime from someone in the area and am going to use that as a template to see how much bigger of a scoop I'd need. Looking on ebay, there are a lot more "squarish" scoops that I think would fit the lines of the early legacies better. Eventually, I'll probably try and find a junkyard hood and work the scoop/shroud in the that, along with some 22b vents.

Of course, this might all be for naught if I can figure out some way to convert my v2 intercooler (are a stock usdm wrx intercooler) into an a/w intercooler.

I am just not too hip on cutting out the hood to fit. I would rather apply, cut and sand fiberglass to work. I do agree a bit, that the wrx scoop is more rounded, but after the work I am doing, I think it will look good. The wrx scoop has a small fin in the middle, and I was thinking that cutting it to fit, I will have to take 2 inches from the width. Well, I think it would look cool if I took it from the left side, so the fin sits between the chimney and my saab intercooler.kind of like spearating the flow to the two. Hell, When I get done, I will post pics and you can judge for yourself. AND, if it works, I will have a mold for anyone else who wants to add it to their car.

a custom made, bigger, squarer than impreza hood scoop would be an awesome project. I'd be interested in one if they were made.

im installing an rs hoodscoop on my 91 next weekend
i'll take pics but i'm going an alternate route...

i cut the three vents housing out of a rs hood that was damaged on the front left corner from my buddies shop... so im just going to cut into my hood, partially weld the cut outs fill around the rest of the cutouts with bondo and paint it. this way i can just bolt in the scoop and side vents... and maybe along the line look for something a little better for the side vents.

p.s. laurel, i don't have cut springs anymore... i temporarily upgraded to adjustable coil overs... your quote is almost pointless, but yet still good :)

Sometime this month I am going to go pick up one of those fiberglass hoods with RS scoops from that old group buy with David Carter (if he ever gets back from military duty). I know that whole situation ran afoul, but he is local to me. So, it's easy for me: I hand him the check when he hands over a hood.

If you like, I can report on how that goes and take pics.
