I have a 94 Turbo Wagon, auto. 460,000km's on it.
Once in a while when i mash the gas, the tranny seems to slip and the rev's jump to 6k but car does not accellarate. so i let off the gas and accelarate again and it works fine.
i want to get my fluid all swapped out and replaced. i've heard rumors that doing this with an older tranny can be more harm than good.
has anyone heard anything similar to this ?
also, what fluid is recommended ? i'd prefer to go with mobil 1, but i'm not sure what weight.
thanks.

Can't hurt to change tranny fluid as this is a normal servicing requirement every 50,000kms or so.
Remove the trans sump as well and clean/replace the filter mesh. The pan holds another 1/2 ltr or so of fluid that u can't get out without taking the pan off or sticking your car on a mad lean. In short it's worthwhile doing!!
Also in the sump pan there should be a ring magnet.
clean all the metal particles off this other wise it can't hold anymore crud and this crud will find other magnets i.e. DUTY SOLENOIDS which will cause all sorts of control issues. This happened to me. (If your fluid is dirty it should look like a fuzzy doughnut!)
I use mobil dextron III. II is OK too.
It's an easy job so get onto it!

If you find a garage or dealer with a T-tech (I think that's the name) transmission fluid changer it changes about 7 quarts at once. It taps into one of the tranny lines to the radiator. Then run the car. The old fluid goes into the machine and pushes in the same vol. of new fluid. It's basically a giant syringe on a cart. You can change more of the fluid than the pan will ever let you get at plus see how black & disgusting your old fluid is compared to the new.
