anyone raced or draged a vr4 before
i've read alot of reviews and wanted to know if they are as identical as they say they are.........

which ones betta

IIRC, the GVR4 is a bit heavier. I think it's close to 3500 lbs. Other than that, it's a great car and probably very comparable to the RS. I can't speak from experience because I've never even seen a Legacy RS let alone driven one.

There's a comparison between the two on DLC's website, check it out...

I was very close to having a GVR4 for my first car, but the clutch was so bad the car wasn't really driveable and the guy wouldn't come down in price...

However, I believe the GVR4 has more HP, and Brian, I wouldn't be surprised if your source is more credible, but I heard that GVR4's only weigh like 2600lbs! Maybe I should go to this article I just referred to and research it some more :lol:

Thats just about 100lbs heavier than a stock sport sedan 5MT.

The SS had less power, but the VR4 and RS both have 200HP IIRC

vr4 has the 4g63t dsm engine right, so has crazy power potential for pretty cheap. its kinda wierd looking though, and its not a subaru.
I love to case.

Classic Car also recently did a comparo with the Brit spec models and concluded that the Subaru was much more fun. I would also go out on a limb and say likely more reliable and easier to work on, too.

The VR4 also has that f-ed up fwd based awd that mitsubishi makes

correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure subaru's system is fwd based as well.

Not the same thing.

Of any FWD car subaru is the only common one that does it right (except justy). Look at the drivetraing layout, see how the transmission is behind the engine and the halfshafts are equal length?

Its sort of the same Crap that the Lancer has. bleh

Not all cars advertised as 4 wheel drive are really 4WD. Volkswagen and Audi sell cars advertised as 4WD which, in fact, are not full time 4WD. Cars such as the VW Golf Synchro, 4Motion and Audi A3, S3, TT as well as the Seat Leon (all of which share the same platform and engines) have engine torque sent to the rear wheels only in case front wheel spin is detected. The above mentioned cars use a Haldex type clutch center differential which is only activated when the front wheels spin and always deactivated when braking. Why? Because it's cheaper to manufacture as fitting electronics to a mass produced car is much cheaper than fitting additional mechanical parts. Note that higher class vehicles from the same manufacturer use "real" AWD drivetrains. If you're in the market for a full time 4WD car you might want to avoid such models and go for the real thing.

I think that the Mitsubishi, with the primary front wheel drive is more like this. I read a statement on www.wrc.com that said that the lancer was hard to drive for most drivers because the 4wd only kicked in under full throttle or braking. They said that Tommy M. did well because it fit his drivnig style, but other drivers found it very difficult to drive.

Subaru's AWD is more of a "full time" standard, even if the torque split varies.

I would bet the vr4 has something similar to what the lancer had.

Legacy vs VR4

whats up guys.
i'm interested in picking up a Legacy, so I signed on to the list.
I ran across this thread and wanted to lend some experience from a "DSM" Diamond Star Motorsport point of view. :D

In the past 5 years I own or have at least owned 10-15 different styled
4G63 based cars. They're just like any other older/hi-mileage car :?
There's ALWAYS something that needs tending to, something that's either on its' way out, or going. but that's the love of working on cars I guess.
I cuurentrly own GVR4 974/1000.

Mitsubishi made a total of 2000 GVR4's for 1991, and 1000 for 1991,
hence 974/1000 . They came stock with 195HP.
There's is a very big following for these cars.
These cars [like the Eclipses and Talons] are in fact ALL WHEEL DRIVE

We have people there from all walks of life. cops, to college kids, to engineers. Jeff Oberholtzer aka: Keydiver, has successfilly disected the 4G63E-prom ECU. By doing this, there are some of us who are able to run larger injectors and larger fump pumps, along with different mas air systems without tripping the stock default settings of the ECU.
sorry, I'm a layman, so my explanation is not scientific.


Now back to the original issue. In the US we did not get the RS version of the GVR4. The US GVR4 is based on the US 1G [1st generation] Eclipse/Talon, and Laser, with the exception of 4WS or 4 wheel steering. Most GVR4 owner opt to DISCONNECT this feature as it makes the car unstable at higher speeds. The stock 4G63 turbo motor found in the Eclipse Talon, Laser and Galant , can withstand up to 400 horsepower before the rods [the weakest link] start lto deteriorate.

A stock motor [top/bottom end] COMBINED with a STOCK turbo, 3.0 inch turbo back exhaust and K&N air filter, with a Super AFC, EGT and a 255 LPH Walbro in tank pump at 20 psi can net you soewhere in the relm of 300HP :shock: Keep in mind, there will have to be some type of tuning to achieve this, however there aer MANY cars with this recipe running around.

Same as with Subies, TUNING is the key. Curt Brown a well known drag racer amongst the DSM crowd recently ran a MID 10 second 1320 on a stock bottom end.

My GVR-4 hasnt been dynoed but with all the mods performed [and I forgot to list all the head work] I'm sure I'm seeing sosmewhere in the region of 300-350 horses.

I hope to learn alot from you guys in the next couple of months!! :D

Now THAT is a sweet ride!!

I always wanted one of those vr4s (even wrote a post about it on this board)!! Another member of your board (most likely) and former member of this board (not sure if he checks this site anymore), Adam Bloom from Z1 Performance, is actually the previous owner of my current car.

His summary of the turbo legacy and the vr4 was that the vr4 was MUCH faster, but the legacy was more fun to drive. I take it for what it's worth. Like I said, I wish I had BOTH of them!!

Thanks for your compliments! As for finding something in the area, you might be a little out of luck, I'm afraid. I know one of the local members on this board had problems finding a turbo legacy . . . he ended up going to CT to get one! :shock:

Yup!

Mach V Motorsports!!!! Actually I work there on a VERRRRY part time basis, as I'm starting up my own porting and polishing business.
I do all the porting and polishing for their exhaust manifolds, and o2 sensor housings, and turbine housings that are sold on the Mach V site.

mate check out www.rslibertyclub.org/forums for any liberty related stuff, the americans got a 160hp, 2.2ltr non intercooled version of the car.
as far as your question goes, i have only ever been beaten by one, and it had lots of work done to it.
MY02 B4 Liberty, 2 1/2" off the primary with splitter, 3" off the secondary, 3" the rest of the way, completely stainless, k&n filter, ECUtek 3, 500HP walbro, 173kw@all4

as far as your question goes, i have only ever been beaten by one, and it had lots of work done to it.
