Very bad steering problem with '92 Legacy Sport Sedan.

Post by TheSubaruJunkie »

1992 Legacy Turbo Sedan. 5spd, AWD, 4dr.

When i accelerate real hard, seems like the rear end wants to swerve to the left. When i let off the gas, the front end wants to veere to the right. Makes it very difficult to handle the car at high speeds when it wants to fishtail everywhere... and its kinda scary.
And if i hold the steering wheel steady and let the car make a wide right turn, the front of the car will steer hard, then steer back, then sharp, then back... and repeat... all without me even moving the steering wheel.

Also seems when i brake hard, the rear end wants to swerve as well.

Anybody have any ideas?

Ok, i'll have my mech check it out. But the camber looks good in the rear.

This is what scares me the most. Only happens when i steer right. Seems as if the power steering is going in and out.

If you're holding the wheel steady, but the car is moving independently, that's not the power steering. If that went it would only cause variable strength required to turn (as well as some likely noise). Your car is probably variably toeing out - something loose or worn in the rear suspension as ciper suggested. Have the mechanic check the front for the same problems while he's at it.

I had a similar problem at low speeds when one of my rear control arms broke, which resulted in random toe depending on load.
