Tires for wrx rims?

Post by stawa »

I just bought Wrx rims and the stock tires on them suck!
Could some one recommend a good tire?

Falkens are great, for autocrossing.

Where do you live (do you need a good summer tire or a good wet/dry tire)

If summer only Id look at Yokohama AVS ES100 or Kumho Ecsta 712 in 205 50 16

If Wet/Dry Id look at the Dunlop SP Sport A2 for firm ride or the Continental ContiExtremeContact for comfort also in 205 50 16

All four above mention tires should be available for 400-450 installed with road hazard

If you're looking for all-season tires then Yokohama YK420s have pretty nice grip, and are good enough in snow to get around.

the falken ziex ze-512 and ze-502 are good bang for buck as well. I think one of them was rated number one tire for all season and they are cheap: a set for 400-450.

I also had the Falken ZIEX 512s which are good tires, but I find the cheaper Yokohama A550Hs I have now to be better in almost every regard (so far seem to last longer, too) and $46/ea.! Although that's for 15".

Are both of these pretty good in the rain? I'm looking for a summer tire, but I don't want to be hanging on if it starts to rain.

I have a set of those on right now. They are good tires. Not so great for dirt though.

I have the Falken Ziex 512 on my Impreza (almost 9k miles now) and like them quite well so far.

I checked tirerack.com for Yokohama A550H and didn't see them listed. Are they called something else now?

The Yokos were current in Nov. as my Falkens were slashed on Halloween. I think they're very good in the rain and surprisingly kick ass in the snow (we got 36" in two days here and I could make it further up my steep hill than some 4wd plows. Notice I'm fwd. The Falkens were terrible in snow). We also get lots of rain here and I have no problem with hydroplaning. I think the snow worthiness stems from the 60k tread life - the deep grooves between the treads do well at packing snow in for traction. My old '83 with 80k mile Bridgestones was the same way.

I just bought a set of Falken FH-451's (225/55ZR16) at ustireoutlet.com $70.04 each with $65 delivery for the set of 4 to New England. Awesome tire regardless of the price, but the price is an absolute steal! Keep away from onlinetires.com! What a bunch of A-Holes. I tried to call them for 4 days and the phone was busy the whole time. I left voicemail messages and no one called me back. I sent email and no one answered it until I told them I thought they were a scam in the subject line . Then they responded and told me to go sonewhere else. WHAT A-HOLES! Hope no one needs their help because you won't get any!

"(225/55ZR16)"

Umm.... Those are way too big and arent going to fit. Even if they did your car would be alot slower and your speed would be off by 107%

I have them on my Mustang. Go their and poke around. Strangely the smaller size (205/55ZR16) actually costs more.

I think 225/55/16's will fit on wrx wheels, there was a guy around here running 225/50/16's on his leg with wrx wheels. Also don't you mean the speedo will be off by 7% cause 107% at 60 mph his speedo would be reading 124.2 mph

yes the 225/55/16's might fit, especially since the 225/50/16's fit, but...I wouldn't do it. He was running on stock suspension and every corner he made he rubbed. It was all on the fender well plastic liner stuff. But still, he didn't have much room with those tires. If you put a 55 series tire on there your going to be even taller.....but....they can be made to fit.

With WRX wheels they wont fit our cars, unless you get wheel spacers.

Thawa: was that a first generation legacy with 225 50 16?

That legacy did have 225/50/16 on wrx rims. I test drove it. It was a 91. I didn't think those wheels would fit either. Now...the 225/55/16 will fit the rim....but I didn't say they would necessarily fit the car. They may not even clear the strut tower. I don't have any clue how the 50 series did. He did have the stock suspension. The struts were replaced but they were factory ones.

They were new, when he bought them at least. THey had some wear on them, but they weren't that bad.

They were pirelli's I think. Let me check.

I still cant belive it, and Im not calling you a liar either.

I could get very worn 205 55 16 to rub on 4 places in the front and two on the rear. With new ones they have created some shiny spots and I had to sledge hammer the rear struts.

225 50 16 is the same height but alot wider, cant see how it doesnt touch. Unless he is driving like a complete old lady. Even then it should have touched the rear struts.
