taking it backwards....

The new impreza suspension does fit into a GC8. The GC8 suspension does fit into the legacy.

This tells me it will work; how well? give it a try and let us know.

Yes, if you have all the spring perches and mounts, it will for sure.

What about spring/damper rates? Does anyone know the weight distribution of the v7s? I can't imagine that they have a different distribution than say a 98-01 RS, which has a different rate than the legacy.

as far as i know GDA (2002+wrx/impreza) suspension is slightly different than the gc8 (93-2001 impreza) suspension but can me made to fit... you'll need the appropriate spring perches as well as top mounts, and i believe the brake line hangers need some tweaking... the gc8 suspension works on our cars

the new GDA chassis has a weight distribuution closer to our legacy than that of the gc8 which was some 300-400lbs lighter

i'd think it will work fine, but you'll need legacy strut tops

OK i found some info.

Weight distribution F/R

Legacy turbo sedan 5MT 56/44
New Age Impreza STi 58/42
2000 GC8 Coupe 5MT 59/41

Seem's like the Ol' Legacy beats the best. Will the different dampening adversly affect handling? An STi suspension will make for a very stiff front end and softer tail than as would the same setup in an STi, correct?
Will that make for a larger gap between the tire and fender in the front then in the back?

The combination of dampening and spring rates on the sti setup work very very well together so you wouldn't have to worry about crappy handling.... the sti suspension is usually about 1" lower than the equivalent non-sti wrx model as well as having a higher spring rate. The suspension won't be extremely harsh or bouncy as some aftermarket setups.

The STi ride is quite harsh. I drove one last week. But still I like 8) I'm just after even lowering, not a front sitting higher then the rear.
