Tein Coilovers...

Post by BAC5.2 »

I can get a pretty, well, really good deal on a set of Tein Type Flex coilovers with the EDFC module.

I was wondering if the setup for the 93-01 Impreza would bolt up to our cars?

I was also wondering if anyone had this setup? Would it even be worth it over a set of, say, KYB AGX's and some S-Tech springs?

I'll probably run the track every once in a while, but I also just enjoy driving on backroads and the like. I wouldn't mind having it really soft for city normal driving, and then stiff for backroads and stuff.

What do you guys think?

I can get the Type Flex and the EDFC for like $1800 brand spankin new. Is it even worth considering?

I'm running HAs on my wagon, they work just fine.

I would somewhat recommend a strut setup for most people, however, as the ride is a bit rough. If you've never been in a car with coilovers, it'd be night and day.

Coilovers pretty much go from stiff to stiffer.

Haha, well I rode in Boostjunkie's car, with the GR2's and Tein S-Tech's. That was pretty rough.

I was wondering if the TEIN's on full-soft would be a bit more compliant?

I live in Maryland, so our roads = suck.

GR2's and Tein Springs and Strut tops would run me right around $600 or so. Would that be a better option? That would be really stiff all the time though...

I don't know if any strut-based suspension can be as stiff as a coilover setup.

HA's on the softest setting might approach the GR2s, but it's all conjecture. There's no way to compare them realistically unless you did it back to back.

I'd stick with the cheaper, more reliable and compliant strut setup.

I've ridden in a WRX with that exact suspension. SUPER STIFF. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for street use. It'd probably be really nice on a track or in an autoX environment though.

Can you use the WRX top hats, as a lot of GC8 coil overs come with camber plates.

Well, seeing as I llive in the same area as you, and noting that I had the TEIN S-TECH/GR-2/STi mount combo, I can honestly say that the ride was HARSH! I think it had to do with the mounts, which had little to no play. My suspension setup was ALOT harsher than my friend's 99 Si with ground controls (lowered about 2 inches), agx's (on the hardest setting), and 195/50s for tires.

I think it could've also had to do with suspension design, but I was really shocked when he was taking a bump that I would normally cringe for and we kinda just coasted over it.

I can't imagine what a coilover setup would be like. There are a bunch of people in our area running TEIN setups on their wrxs. You might wanna get in touch with them before jumping on this deal, if you're worried about suspension stiffness.

You also have to take into account tuning. Like the engine, a coilover setup has to be tuned properly for optimal performance. I know some dedicated autocross/track guys who spend as much time corner-weighing and then testing at the track, and then redoing all of their settings to find the optimal balance for their driving style. Are you planning on putting this much time and effort into figuring out the proper settings?

Mind you, what "looks" right may actually be detrimental to suspension performance.

If not, then a coilover setup is probably not worth the money, IMHO.

Yea, it's a great deal, but I don't know how much I really want coilovers.

It was just a thought because of the price. The car will see less track than it will street, so suspension tuning isn't TO critical. I will probably go with AGX's (or Koni's, whatever my buddy can get me), some S-Tech's, and the STi tops. If I find that this setup is inadequate, then I'll consider the Tein setup.

Too stiff will actually hurt street performance also as bumps can knock a stiff car off line (or worse) while softer setups can just absorb and continue. Of course finding that compromise is the magic of suspension tuning.

softer suspension is also helpful in the wet or snow...
that said does anyone know of some reasonable quality ground control style coilovers, ie the threaded collar ones that slip over the strut? was thinking of getting some of those for the height adjustability. not only that race springs 2.5" I.D. are available in pretty much any length and rate. just need the right collars and top mount setup though.
I love to case.
