hah i know this sounds stupid, but im trying to figure out which cylinder is the #1 cylinder. I dont have a haynes or a factory service manual, and I need to know which cylinder is #1 so i can set the ignition timing correctly. Any help would be appreciated
Also, when your engine is at #1 TDC, what position is your crank key located at on your car (if anybody remembers), 12 oclock? 6 oclock? My keyway was gouged out by a loose crank pulley so im trying to get her running again.

If you look on your coil pack it should have the numbers on it, subaru took it off sometime down the road though. If you're facing the front the engine it is setup like this:

I dont know what you mean when your engine is at #1, #1 what? I just line up the marks for the crank sprocket with the marks for the cam sprockets, it shouldn't make a difference, at the very worst you wouldn't be able to start the car, you shouldn't damage anything if your timing is off. Assuming you have a SOHC ej22

You don't go by the key, there's actually a timing mark on the crank pulley.
It looks like a little V cut into the lip of the last groove closest to the block. This mark will line up with 0 on the timing scale when either the #1 or #2 cylinders are at TDC. The only way to tell which is which is to install a compression gauge in the #1 spark plug hole. Then turn the engine over until you get to the compression stroke ( I would use a large breaker bar and socket) on #1 and then line up the crank pulley mark to 0 on the timing scale. That will be TDC on the #1 cylinder.

Ty everyone. What im doing is trying to save my crank/crankshaft timing gear from having to be replaced. The loose crank pulley let the key slide around in the keyway and ground out the keyway, the crank gear, (not very much) and the crank pulley (a whole lot, ordered a cheap lightened underdrive pulley for now to get it going, 47.00 new)
Im jbwelding the crank, the crank timing gear, and the key together so they dont slide around, I have the key as close to the original position as possible, everything just looks strange to me. I wasnt sure which cylinder on the car is the #1 cylinder, only worked on EA81's and 2's before, and I wanted to check for top dead center by pulling the plug out so i could gauge how close my crank pulleys timing mark is.
My original problem with the car was basically it had NO power whatsoever, would stall if you let the clutch out, wouldnt stay running under load, unless the diagnostic connectors were connected together.
It also wont rev over about 5500rpm. I pulled the codes, only one i got was a 35 (purge control solenoid inoperative) which IMHO has absolutely nothing to do with my problem. I pulled the crank pulley off so i could check my timing and ran into this can of worms. =[
Im assuming the reason the car is running like SH** is because with the loose key/keyway, the timing moves around under load, which would explain the no power, and power surging when in motion, so im hoping if i fix this ill be good to go.
