Rotex pads?

Post by BAC5.2 »

Anyone using these from www.buybrakes.com?

Tirerack has got exactly jack when it comes to pads (EBC and SBS).

I kind of want Carbotech Bobcats, but I don't have the desire to drop $200 on pads right now.

Anyone using them? I'll probably order some Brembo rotors and some Rotex pads here shortly. Possibly a set of Goodridge Stainless lines as well.

Any other pads you guys can recomend, and where to get them? I am just looking for a good all-street pad.

I've already ruled out EBC. To many horror stories for me to be comfortable with.

Thanks!

I really like my Axxis pads that I bought from StopTech. I have Axxis Ultimates on the front and Metal Masters on the rear. I don't think Ultimates are available for stock Legacy Turbo fronts, though.

I'm not highly qualified as a brake pad connoisseur, but they seem to do well cold and warm and fade is minimal.

I got Goodridge stainless brake lines, but in retrospect I wish I hadn't. If I had to do it all over again (and I might, on my "new" car), I'd use some M10x1 inverted flare adapters and 10mm banjo adapters and some AN-3 or AN-4 line from Earl's or something. That way any future servicing would only involve disconnecting and reconnecting AN fittings, and I bet in the end it would still be pretty close to the cost of the Goodridge lines.

That last part you just said about the lines was over my head, lol.

Where did you get the Metal Masters? How Rotor Friendly are they? Expensive?

I am running EBC Goldstuff up front and Hayes Sintered Metallic on the rear on my mountain bike. I wish my car was as easy to setup, lol.

Hehe, I was just saying I'd put adapters on the car's brake lines and on the calipers so that everything would be AN fittings, and then just use AN lines.

I got the Metal Masters from StopTech. They weren't too expensive -- somewhere in the neighborhood for $40. And I was very happy with their service.

Metal Masters aren't terribly hard on rotors; Ultimates, being ceramic, are. Anyway, though, my rotors seem to be handling it pretty well. I had them cryogenically treated, which I think made a big difference.

Ahh, I see. I am not a brake expert, so I'd be willing to guess that that operation is beyond the realm of my ability at the moment.

hmmm, pads from stoptech eh? I just might know a body that can get me a deal. I'll also likely have my rotors cryo treated from the place you mentioned in Laurel's thread. I don't think I can get a discount from www.300below.com

I really need to figure out how to work on car brakes.

You'll figure it out quickly. Everything's pretty straightforward.

A place that's closer to us than One Cryo is Alpine Cryogenics in Moosic, PA. Doug Batzel, the guy who runs it, charged me $30 per rotor. You could probably order the discs from wherever you want (Tire Rack, or AutoWebAccessories.com if you want OEM at a similar price) and have them shipped straight to Alpine. It might come out cheaper than shipping them across the country to One Cryo.

Their outdated web site is at http://www.alpinecryo.com/ . The email address there is correct even though the physical one isn't.

Brakes are very straightforward and especially easy on these cars. I suggest just trying it - unless you have no mechanical ability at all (which I'm sure isn't true) you won't screw them up. Rotors just pop off (unless the rear parking brake is stuck) and the pads take no time. I could change pads and rotors in twenty minutes with taking my time.

Oh, about that -- if there's a lot of corrosion between the rotor and the hub the rotor may not just pop off. If that happens, slowly and evenly thread a pair of M8x1.25 bolts into the holes in the rotor hat to pop it loose.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined, it's just the parts that I've never pulled the brakes apart on a car so I don't know the internals and components of the calipers. I've changed rotors and pads, that's no issue.

If it's anything like mountain bike stuff, I should have no problems. I can rebuild mountain bike calipers in my sleep now, and bleed them in 2 minutes tops.

I'll probably clean my rear calipers this weekend and see how it goes.
