newbie needs help

Post by stevemasteller »

hey guys i have a 1994 turbo wagon and there is some weird things going on. the trans shifts firm and correctly under normal town driving (under 45 mph) but on the highway (around 55-75mph) or climbing a long hill the trans starts to feel like it is trying to downshift but then doesn't. it is no really a slip but feels more like a miss in the engine or a shutter. there is no CEL or anything. the other thing is the speedo is slow to change with the speed when it is in the same speed range (speed up from 55-75mph) but you can feel the car speed up. sometimes the speedo get stuck then falls quickly to correct speed when slowing down. the cruise control has a hard time keeping speed, it will sometime add 10 mph to the speed i set it at. i just got the car and hope there is no big problems with the drivetrain. any suggestion would help.

thanks very much for your time.

Just a guess here, but I wonder if its the vehicle speed sensor? Have you tried to pull failure codes? Sometimes they just store them wothout flashing a CEL.

or if it's tcu related you wouldnt get a cel at all. the power light would flash though to notify you something is wrong. Like steve said pull those codes :)

It does sound like it's the vehicle speed sensor.

The VSS is built into the speedometer, so if the speedometer is sticking or lagging around that speed range, the TCU's speed readings probably are sticking or lagging as well. That seems like it could really muck with shifting.

the power light stays on for around 10-15 seconds after i start the car is this normal? the VSS is where? right on the back of the speedo or is it somewhere else? how do i fix it? how do i pull the codes? is it the same as for the engine or is it a different port or what? i just got the car a week ago. my last one was a '98 impreza rs 5-spd. so never had a TCU, that is the trans control unit right? where is it located at. is the check port on it?
