Weight Distribution?

Anyone know the weight distribution of a SS (with a 5MT if it matters)?

I was curious about this today. Seems like it'd be pretty damn good what with the AWD and all (tossing some weight out back).

Stock turbo 5MT sedans were 56 front 44 rear. Better then any GC8 or current impreza, including the STi.

Hmm, I wonder how hard it would be to get some more weight over the rear and off the front. Maybe relocate the battery to the trunk?

heh. Moving the battery to the rear will definetly help. If your A/C doesn't work then removing the compressor and condensor will also help out.

You might be well off getting a lighter battery than relocating it - taking weight away is never a bad idea and it would be less trouble than running large gauge wire through the car.

See, this is why I wish I could get a fiber glass or what would really be sweet, a carbon fiber hood. This and an Optima battery would be sweet!

That's a pretty good ratio. I'm surprised.

Subarus have a flaw in their drivetrain setup that a lot of people overlook. The engine and transmission are pushed a lot farther forward than most cars, because the front wheels are driven by a longitudanally-mounted drivetrain. The Honda S2000, with a perfect 50:50 ratio, has its engine sitting almost behind the front wheels, while our engines are entirely in front of the front wheels.

Suby, there's no other elegant solution for AWD than to hang it out the front. The engine configuration pretty much forces it before or after the suspension due to its width, also. Luckily these things are light and with a low CG. Would be great in a front-mid or rear-mid sports car with rwd. Too bad nothing ever happened with the Osca 2500GT.

Well, unless Subaru went the route Lamborghini did with their AWD system. . . incorporating the transfer case into the bottom of the engine. . . THEN the engine could sit just aft of the front wheels (much as the Lambo engine sits just ahead and over the rear wheels).

Don't think that would help serviceability or safety, though. The Miura was first produced with a shared transaxle/engine sump. Led to some reliability issues. The Nissan Skyline system could be employed, but the forward driveshaft would have to go excessively low, but there's the questionable practicality of the packaging on a sedan/wagon again.

Yeah, the whole reason the engine is in front of the wheels is the transmission/differential system. The only way subaru could keep a similar setup and push the engine back would be to raise it up quite a bit and shove the differential under the engine area. Or like was said go to an external transfercase system, though that kinda throws that whole symetrical AWD thing out the window.

EDIT: got anymore info on that osca?

It was one of those 'revival' sports car marques that popped up like weeds about 7 yrs ago. OSCA was the company the Maserati brothers started after selling Maserati to an Italian count. They built mostly small displacement race cars and some road cars. In the mid-late '90's someone tried to start a new company with that name to build light weight sports cars using mid-mounted Subaru 2.5 N/As and possible 2.0 turbos from WRXs. I think the car was alloy chassis and fiberglass body like an Elise. This was a closed car though with a clamshell rear cover for the engine/transaxle/suspension. Had an aircraft-like cockpit. At least one prototype was built and it sounded like it was really going somewhere, but never amounted to anything. Was a pretty cool looking car though and I was very disappointed it never made it unlike the rest of the mostly retro crap cars that were being prototyped for investors at the time.

VW should have built the OSCA instaed of the white elephant Bugatti which has still to bear fruit - I've seen the prtotype for that and was not at all impressed. Seems very pointless.
