Those of you that have bought vehicles from out-of-state or even in state. I'd just like some feedback on getting temporary registration and insurance for that vehicle to drive it back home.
Are they going to give me hell about getting a temp plate....do I have to get a temp plate in my home state, or can I go to get one in the state it's currently in. What if current tabs are expired.....all that stuff.
Any feedback, experiences would be greatly appreciated.

when i've bought my cars, you run with the current plate until the tabs expire, after that, you get your own new plate. Happened when we transferred title on ruby, and when the CRX was bought. I think you only get the smiley stickers if you buy from a dealer

These kinds of rules vary from state to state.
I'll just write what I've experienced:
A friend of mine bought a car in New Jersey from a dealer and the dealer put temporary NJ tags on it. He registered it in NY once he got here.
When I bought my most recent Legacy I just put the plates from my other Legacy on it when I picked it up. I figured even though it was the wrong car the tags would at least lead to me. I drove very carefully back home, several hours away, and then mailed the paperwork to my dad in VA who took it to VA's DMV, registered it, and mailed me the new plates.
When my friend who lives in NY traded in his old Taurus at a dealership for a new Legacy, the dealership moved the plates from the Taurus to the Legacy and notified the DMV.
I would ask the Texas DMV/MVA/whatever it's called about it, but my guess is that if you buy it from a dealer out of state the dealer can issue temporary plates for their state. And if you buy it from a private party out of state you need to get temporary tags from your state before you go to get the car.

Yup, definitely a state to state thing. I just sold a Tahoe here in Cali and there's a bunch of crap you have to fill out/sign with the title and the new owner. Part of that gets mailed to the DMV and the new owner takes your old title as a temp thing. He is then responsible for taking all that to the DMV and getting new plates/registration/title. Depending on how far you're driving, I'd just take it easy and keep and eye out for smokey.

When a friend of mine bought her 93 Loyale in NJ the DMV up there issued a temp tag for like 2 weeks that allowed them to drive it home and then it had to be titled in VA.
When we bought my brothers Cherokee we purchased a "single trip temp tag" that was good for like 3 days to get the vehicle home, and then permanently register it.

MA is the same as WA without the late penalty except you also carry a written bill of sale (usually written for less than the transaction amount to reduce sales tax upon registration).
