WTF??? Do you all remember that Blaster worm that was shuttin ppl's computers off automatically? For some reason, I got it on my new comp, even though that was like a year ago. DL'ed the Microsoft patch, and it's still doing it. I am also getting this message on startup that says something (I don't remember the name) is screwed up and wants to send Microsoft a report.

Do you have the original CDs for everything, or access to the, ahem, "originals"?
It may actually be best to just reformat and reinstall. I know, I know, the stupid format c: /q response....
Otherwise, maybe something like Norton Antivirus can take care of the worm. But that may not fix the startup problem.

Well
That is because of people like you that don't have sufficient security to stop the attack, then your pc is one of the drones that attacks new pc's like yours.
If you are broadband, then spend $50, get a router, and do a quickrestore.
Its like saying, remember that road I drove down last year that had all the nails, and I got a flat tire? Well, I drove down it this year and I got another flat!!! WTF!!! Stupid Bridgestone!!!!

totech, chill dude. I know it's not the puter's fault, I was just venting
What's funny, I don't ever recall seeing a QuickRestore CD with this new puter, I wonder if I can use my old Compaq's CD, the old one is XP, as is this one.
I'm FINALLY gonna get broadband soon, so I'll probably upgrade my security when I do that...
Also, my cookies folder must be f'ed up. I had to login to post this, even though I checked the box when I first logged in on this computer.

I wonder if it's one of those viruses that I have - it changes my default homepage to some shitty search engine (got it from a Google search, and no I never clicked 'ok' to install anything) whenever I reboot and no matter what I do, i can't seem to get rid of it. I heard that there are other versions of what I have that will shut down the computer on you and plant all kinds of porn sites and pop ups on you. I forget what this type of virus is called now, but I guess they can be a real bitch to get rid of and anti-virus software is having a hell of a time keeping up or IDing them.

evo: try spybot ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) and/or ad-aware ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ ), chances are high that one of them will be able to remove it.

Cool. Thanks. And thanks for the parts. Came in today - you didn't need to send both spindles, but thanks! You're the man today unless Vikash cracks the ECU in the next few hours and takes the title away...

If either Spybot S&D or Adaware don't get the problem fixed for you, shoot me a PM. There's another program called HiJackThis that will help a lot if your homepage has been hijacked or if you've had a lot of spy/adware on your computer. The only problem is that if you go clicking on shit in that program, it can cause a lot of damage.
Oh, and google searches aren't going to install this crap on your computer. Ultimately it's something the user clicked on.

What happened with the hijack was I clicked on a Google search which turned no results but a pop up search engine, coolsearch or something, also came up. I clicked the x to close it and the next time I connected the search engine showed up as my homepage.
My friend has the same problem with his that he got through a Google search also.
Thanks for the help, though and now I'm done hijacking...

This message says "LSA Shell (Export Version) has encountered a problem and needs to close" then it asks for me to send a report to Microsoft.subyluvr2212 wrote:I am also getting this message on startup that says something (I don't remember the name) is screwed up and wants to send Microsoft a report.

Is it a Dell? I fixed the LSA problem on a client's computer yesterday
Also, a lot of times the pop-ups are actually a single picture. If you click anywhere on the picture, it installs something. The best way to get rid of those pop-ups is to right click their corresponding task bar icon and select "close". That way you don't have to click on anything. I would also recommend the Google toolbar as it has a pop-up stopper built in and isn't affiliated with another ad/spyware company.

The virus is called either sassa.a or sassa.b worm, you can download the fix from the symantic website.
to remove:
1. turn off system restore
2. boot into safe mode w/ networking
3. run the fix
4. go to housecall.antivirus.com and run that too, just to be sure
5. run windows update and get all the latest security fixes
6. re-enable system restore
7. reboot
easy!
everything will be back the way it was.
I've fixed 14 of these in the past two days =D
