H6 rear brake upgrade...

Post by czo79 »

Hello all...
I am wondering what you guys think about the H6 rear brake upgrade. I've been thinking about doing it on my 97 GT. I have been having problems with pad material on rotors, even though I got cryos and nice hawk hps pads and broke them in, I think all the really hard braking I do every time I go by one of the turn around where the cops hide does them in. So I was thinking about doing the H6 upgrade on my rear. I know it will shift the brake bias a bit to the rear, and I was thinking maybe that will help make the fronts not have to work quite so hard. Eventually maybe I will do an wrx upgrade up front...but in the meantime, if I just do the H6 rear, does anyone have an opinion on how noticable the brake bias shift will be? I don't want to screw up the cars handling under braking...I have heard people say that they find the shift in bias from the h6 upgrade to be a good thing...
thoughts?
thanks
Micum

I'd say it'd be good.

I'd have to get the #'s for the calipers & rotors to get you the detailed info.

When I get it.....I'll add it to this excel document.

On the off chance that you're looking for these as used parts, you should know that the term "H6" in this case is a misnomer. I do believe these same rear brakes are used on all BH wagons.

Do a Legacy Turbo rear brake swap instead.

We have better brakes than the "H6" upgrade. They are just upsized solid rotors. We've got the vented rears. You could probably get the brackets and calipers from a pick-n-pull and just order some rotors from www.buybrakes.com or www.tirerack.com

You would need the rotors, calipers, and pads. Those rotors should bolt up assuming you've got the rest.

It's not cut-and-dry which rear brake setup is better ("H6" or Legacy Turbo).

The "H6" rotors will definitely give you more brake torque than the Legacy Turbo rotors.

But the turbo ones should cool off more easily since they have more surface area.

But the "H6" ones might have more thermal mass, so maybe they would heat up more slowly too.

The coolest would be the rear brakes used on current Legacy B4s and GT-Bs. They're vented like the Legacy Turbo rotors but they're the same diameter as the "H6" rotors.

Hmm, I wonder if the B4 brackets would bolt onto a BC...

Oh yea, what is the diameter of the H6 brakes? I always thought 10.4" for the stockers was pretty large (Roman's SHO has 10.1" solid rears)

I'm sure the B4 brackets would bolt onto a BC...

The stock Legacy rear brakes are 266mm in diameter. The "H6" ones are 290mm in diameter.

They are pretty big, but the rear brakes are still weak enough that there's a noticeable front bias to the brakes, which gets worse when you upgrade the fronts.

What kind of weight distribution does the SHO have?

Hmm, How can the rear balance be helped?

I have a friend checking to see how much for the rear gear. Rotors, brackets, and calipers. It'd come from Japan, so it might not be the cheapest rear upgrade in the world. He's also checking price of all 4 corners for me. See how it goes.

I dont remember on the SHO, more weight up front than we have, that's for damn sure.

So the SHO probably has a lot less load on the rear brakes...

If you have a sedan you can improve brake balance a little by using the proportioning valve from a wagon. Josh did this.

For the GT-B rear brakes, the best way to get rotors might be through a DBA dealer or something. I wonder if the pads are the same as those for the "H6"; it seems likely.

My buddy is calling Subaru Japan on Monday night at 1am (really tuesday morning) for me. Straight up B4 rear setup. I wonder how that would feel, 11.4" vented rotors at both ends?

Would a B4 rear and WRX front be THAT bad of a combo in terms of feel and bias? Would a proportioning valve be recomended for something like that?

You already have a proportioning valve, so the rears would get less pressure than the fronts under hard braking. They get less force than the fronts anyway because they have less piston area.

I think I'd like that setup.
