5MT in newer Legacy's?

Post by G-reg »

So I've started looking around for the next suby, I feel like I'm cheating. I'd love a new Turbo Legacy/ForresterXT/WRX, but that is probably out of my range-I'm going to have some fatty school loans to start paying off here soon. I think I need the space of a Leg, I don't think the Impreza's can hold all the crap I carry around. So I've been looking at 2000+Legacy Outbacks, they look nice and they are reasonably priced. My problem is that I have never seen one with a 5mt.....Do they even exist? What about the GT's, wagon of course.

You do not want an outback. Repeat...you do not want an outback.

All kidding aside, if you enjoying "driving" then you should probably find yourself a nice GT. My brother's got a '00 GT sedan and my sister's got a '01 GT wagon. They're great cars albeit a little on the heavy side and a little underpowered. My other buddy has a '97 GT and he seems to be super stoked on it.

Oh, and to answer your question. Yes, Outbacks have always had a 5mt available.

If you want something newer, look for a 95-99 Legacy wagon with the 2.2. You'll still have the tough-as-nails EJ22, but newer and more room.

As Brian said, Outbacks are trouble. The DOHC EJ25 has facial tissue for headgaskets, and the newer SOHC is still somewhat problematic.

Not to mention they're taller and don't handle nearly as well. I think the early Outbacks had the 2.2L as well though.

Thanks, for the info. I thought the 2.5’s had the head gasket thing solved by 2000-or with the SOHC. What is really different from the OB to the GT. I thought the OB had taller-stiffer suspension, taller wheels, and the body cladding.

I think the early 2.5's had some valve issues as well.

My sister's got a 2001 Outback and its quieter with a higher quality interior, but is nowhere near as fun to drive. It feels very heavy and understeers horribly in comparison. Manuals are out there, but rare.
