Up-Pipe removal Qs
OK, I've got an exhaust leak at the up-pipe/turbo junction, I think it's just the gasket that's gone, but it could be the pipe itself also. Now, The stealer wants 4+ hours labour to take it off. Does the turbo really have to be removed to get the up-pipe out? They want to remove the turbo, TBE obviously, and then the up-pipe.
The car has to pass Ontario's DriveClean emissions test, and it won't with the leak (at least, I don't think it will, I'm gonna find out looks like).
Thoughts?
The car's in for a timing belt/seals, figured I'd kill two birds with one stone, but not at that rate!

I may be taking you up on that, but not right away. My bill just went up by $300, crank sensor fell apart as they were taking it off, and it needs a new tensioner. Also, they can't get the parts til tomorrow, so now I can't get to work tonight unless I borrow my mom's car or something. Yay, $1000 bill and the car won't feel any different!

I suppose, though that's what the HAM radio's for!
I'm trying to look at this in the best light, I just didn't need this expense after I just spent all that money on an exhaust. Ah well. I'm driving a Solara to work tonight, top down and everything.

I couldn't imagine the bus from Yonge/Sheppard to 410/Steeles, yikes, that'd take 3 hours probably.
Other than bing a heavy pig, the Solara's not that bad, spins the inside front really nicely if you disable the traction control

$1000? Your lucky. I have put/will put, just under $3000 into the car and it will finally be up to stock. And that's in US funds.
Just start unbolting shit, you'll probably get it off eventually.

It was stuff that was standard maintainence. Water pump, timing belt, brakes, lots of things that would have needed to be done at 100k anyways.
Almost 1/3 of that $3k is for the clutch that I'm ordering tomorrow. That's $720 big ones.

This thread's gone way off topic, but yeah, I know that feeling. I've done brakes, clutch (stock WRX), TBE, and now this. I've put about $3K CDN into this car now, in the last 16 months since I bought it. Of course, I've also put 53k kms on it in that time too.

Re: Up-Pipe removal Qs
The way I'd do it is to take the passenger side exhaust manifold off then pull the up-pipe down. You'll need a new pass. manifold gasket and a cross-pipe gasket, as well as both up-pipe gaskets. If you have good tools it shouldn't take you more then a couple hours, if that really.MCO-Ryan wrote:. Does the turbo really have to be removed to get the up-pipe out?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Dealing with the oil lines, TBE, and everything else is what brings the time up. The tech said that there are bolts on the underside of the turbo that you can't get to without taking the turbo out, I don't believe that though. I think I'm going to give this one a shot myself, I've got the tools to do it, just need to find time. I need the car back, running first though.
Thanks for the help guys, and Totech, I may take you up on your offer of assistance, let me see what happens today.
