Syd Barrett video - kinda

Post by Tleg93 »

I thought that someone might find this funny so I posted it. It's a video someone put together to The Effervescing Elephant, a funny little song that Floyd founder Syd Barrett wrote when he was 16. Bear in mind that the purpose is to get a chuckle out of it.

That was an African elephant. The Romans killed all the tigers in Africa for their games.

Syd was out of control. If he didn't completely lose it they wouldn't have done their best stuff and would likely be an obscure psychedelic act.

True, but if it wasn't for Syd naming them Pink Floyd, writing all their first hits (Arnold Layne, See Emily Play) and giving them their reputation in the old days at the UFO in london, they would probably have foundered in the beginning. They Architectual Abdabs were going nowhere until they added Sydney to the lineup. His antics are what made the Floyd pioneers in multimedia and effects usage. They do rock a lot harder without Syd and I've always loved Gilmours playing, even if it was a bit repetitive near the end.

I'm not saying he wasn't important, and I like some of his stuff, but Water's writing was much better and more accessible. Some of Syd's stuff is just plain strange. I found it cool in high school, but now I hear it and wonder what the hell I was thinking (and no, I didn't do any drugs). Of course, were it not for Syd going crazy there wouldn't even be a Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You were Here, or The Wall. So even were it only for the inspiration he provided, he's an indespensible part of the band.

Yeah, waters writing was more accesible. He was also a bit reactionary too but I like that. He is definetly a more complex individual, filled with all kinds of fears and delusions, in short, an average person. Syd was more of an artistic, in the moment, type guy which might have hurt him in the end. I also kind of lean towards Roger's lyrics especially on the albums up to the wall. After that though he kind of fizzled out if you ask me. I guess he purged all of his demons by that point. He's still a good artist though just not as intense.

How could you listen to Floyd without drugs, man??? :?

Just kidding...

I've never needed them. The 'wall of sound' effect pulls me in without them and I can appreciate the lyrics easily as they're about the kind of shit I always think about. I can really get into music and either cause or effect meditation is relatively easy for me, too. Not that it makes me that mellow a guy - my favorite bands are Pink Floyd, KMFDM, and VNV Nation.
