this does not seem like a good idea, can the bov be hooked up,or is it ok without
also is the saab 900 air/air,or water/air?i hope its air/air

I'm pretty sure, well 99% sure that he SAAB 900 is an air to air intercooler. I have a sight that talks about installing it, but I don't think it is on a Legacy like ours. I think it is for a turboed older gen imprezza, but it may help you guys get some ideas. The guy made an L shaped bracket and bolted the thing to the firwall, I'm not so sure that is a good idea, though.

A friend of mine has just installed a Saab A/A IC on his 96 Brighton Impreza with an EJ22T swap. His doesn't have any BOV right now, but he's trying to figure out the best way to do it.
I don't have any pics, and he lives in Chicago...

These days, with the amount of customizing that intercooler companies can do, there is no excuse for installing the Saab intercooler.
A) too small
B) pain the the @$$ to work with.
Spending some more now on your intercooler will yeild better results down the road. You will be happier in the long run.

The Saab IC is air/air. There is a BPV in the pic, it connects the black metal pipe that goes from the turbo to the IC and the blue intake pipe. It has a vac hose going to it. It is not a BOV, it doesn't vent the air, it sends it back in front of the turbo. Called a Bypass valve.

Intercooler
I work with/for a company that probably manufactures the best aftermarket turbo kit around and they also make intercoolers, I only do electronics. If everyone could agree on a IC design that would bolt on or a existing IC that could be modified to fit or possibly an adapter that could be made for an existing IC I would be glad to approch them with the idea.

The Saab intercoolers can handle more boost than any of us will ever run. Those little 2.0s can take upwards of 24 lbs of boost bone stock before they have issues. I know many people, myself included, that were running 16-20 lbs with no problems at all.
As far as size goes, I can't remember the dimensions exactly. But I venture a guess that they were bigger than the old slant ICs on WRXs. I say this because they were "side mount" in the engine bay. between the engione and the radiator, and kinda to the side. Almost no airflow. horrible design. So I think they were made to be pretty big because of their position. They're certainly big enough for our applications.

Just a side note. the site mentioned earlier that shows the Saab IC says it's 150 bucks at a salvage yard or 80 on ebay. you can get it for more like 40 on ebay, and closer to 20 bucks at a pick-apart yard if you get it yourself. very cheap. I see how he has it set up with the recirc valve now. I may just have to do this.

I'm actually gonna look into this as a possible upgrade.
The yard near me seems to be constantly getting in turbo saabs and volvos. My friend has picked up 10 since he started going there. His idea was to take two of the end tanks off two intercoolers and weld them together . . . to anyone who has this setup, do you think two would fit in the engine bay?
I haven't actually seen these intercoolers in person, so I have no idea whether this idea is feasible or not.
Hehe: "Harry, I need a Saab intercooler . . . no two . . . two of the big ones!!"

Not to sound cocky or anything, but how so? An Air/Air intercooler can only cool the intake charge to ambient temperature (at theoretical 100% efficiency), not below it. On a N/A car There is no compressor (turbo/supercharger) to heat the charge up above ambient. So it'd be useless, unless the intake plumbing was designed stupidly around the exhaust manifold or something, then putting a cooler might help.Would an intercooler benefit on an NA car? I would think it would on a warm or hot day

An intercooler adds restriction in the intake system.......on a n/a car........you do not want that. Besides the heat issue alone.....an intercooler would decrease power on a n/a car.

That answers my question. I figured that the air passing over the fins of the intercooler WOULD be able to cool more than ambient. I didn't really think about the possibility of restriction. Just something I had alway wondered about ever since I saw that picture of the jag. Now it has been answered.

don't bother with top mount coolers with a rs - the bonnet scoop is WAY too small to be of any use, if you are going to get an intercooler get a standard rs water/air cooler, they are good for 300hp and designed for the car, try importing from japan or new zealand they would be pretty cheap as most of us guys get rid of them to fit a front mount air/air set up as 300hp is easily achievable in our cars with minimal mods.
