I have 1994 RHD Subaru Legacy L station wagon!
I am trying to replace the transmission filter and gasket, and I was wondering if there is a peculiar way of extracting the transmission filter out of where it is.
Dropped the transmission pan and removed all of the filter bolts, but there is a metal tubing right above the end side of the filter unit and I just can't get'em out! Are there any more bolts that I need to loosen up? I just hate to apply an excessive force as it just might damage the metal tubing.
If anyone has any advices, that would be greatly appreciated!

you're actually not supposed to replace that. It is supposed to last the lifetime of the transmission. If you wanna do your tranny a favor change the external filter (near the radiator, follow the lines you cant miss it). If you dont already have one you should buy one and install it. Also you should look into an auxillary ATF cooler.

I do have a transmission oil cooler, but I don't think that I have an external transmission filter. I will look into that! Thank you!
I have Haynes Repair manual, but it doesn't have any relevant information that I can use for the job. Could someone out there take a couple of digital photos of the section in the service manual, and send it to me?

Well like I said before you're not supposed to replace that but if you really want to for whatever reason here are some links:

you should really put it all back togethr and hope you get a good enough seal on the pan, I dunno if you have to use a gasket or what but it might be leaking afterwards.

The only reason as to why I wanted to replace the darn filter was that it came with the gasket as transmission filter kit. At any rate, I wasted enough time under the car, getting myself really dirty and frustrated, and I finally realized that perhaps it was just never meant to be. I wonder why the parts store sells this darn kit (filter and gasket) and never sells the gasket alone?
To make the long story short, I had enough of it and decided to install only the gasket.
It is all done now and no more leaks and runs great!

have just done exactly what you are trying to do. had a leak so when i dumped the oil i replaced the filter as well. haven't got pics but there is a small bolt to the rear of that tube you can't see very well, to hold it in. then i used a lever to "very" gently prise it out of the way.
it seems to just fit into the holes as there are no o rings or anything on the ends. the filter easily comes off then.
i was supplied with a cork gasket in the kit...DON'T use it. within a week oil had seeped through so i got to do it all again. used loctite gasket sealer second time, not a drip since.
as for needing to replace the filter, the difference in temp of the atf as it warms up is amazing. on the guage i fitted it seems to be running at half to 2 thirds the temp it used to around town and even better on the highway. am running an oil cooler as well.
