That is pretty cool. Its like how most people recognize human faces and us freaks recognize cars - we see the object as a whole rather than the individual parts. They've done studies and car guys recognize cars the same way as faces, but most people see cars as individual parts so they have more trouble discerning them. As a trade off we have a harder time distinguishing people than your average human. I know for me it's true which makes for some occasionally awkward situations when people see me that I haven't seen in a while. Also women that may look fine on a first date don't always look good at all on the second date. I think that's why I don't sleep with a chick on the first date - I never know what I might wake up to.
