2.5rs springs dont fit top hats?

so eastbaysubaru and i put in most of my replacement suspension today; 2.5rs springs and struts with wrx rims. I had to convert my rear suspension to the non tapered style, no big deal. But we ran into trouble on the front springs. Simply put, the springs don't fit into the existing spring perch. Do 2.5rs's have a different perch? Is this a 90-91 thing? Any ideas what's going on?

I remember noting that WRX front springs wouldn't fit into my 93 Turbo sedan's front spring perches either.

you need to get the front top hats from the dealer, they aren't much. get the rubber perch, too. I had to do this when I converted over to a STi setup. The spring is a smaller diameter IIRC.

Interesting. There was no way they were going to fit. I think we pretty much conclusively determined that from the get go. It's interestingt that there's different perches for the Impreza. Are the top hats and the perches considered one piece? I thought the top hat was the part above the perch.

Bottom to Top.

Spring
Rubber Seat
Perch (Tophat, etc...)
Washer
Top Mount
Top Nut

The stamped piece of metal that fits the spring on top is what I am calling the top hat, the offical term is upper spring perch IIRC.

That clears up a lot of confusion Brat. Thanks! If only we could get everyone to use the common terminology (including me) we'd be all set.
