Do you mean the drivetrain?

My 240Z's rear end used to whine like it was mid-engined, but that was an early Z thing they later fixed.

Is it in a particular gear?

Subarus (MT's at least) make a bit of a whine in 1st and 2nd gears. It actually whines in all gears, but it gets quieter and higher-pitched as you increase speed, so you don't hear it above 3rd gear.

Mine goes, only when I press the accellerator, louder as I go faster. I'm going ti write it off as bad tranny/front diff. But who knows.

Reverse whines because it's straight cut instead of being helical cut.

I wish I had a straight cut 1st and 2nd gear, maybe 3rd also. And I wish I could have dog-rings on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. That'd be bullet proof for shifting quickly.

But it'd be annoying to drive. Not many women would tolerate it.

The auto shouldn't whine. I'd say it's the rear diff.

A) I don't care if women will tolerate it or not. I'm the one driving.

B) It'd only be annoying in 1st and 2nd. How often are you in 1st or 2nd? A lot less than you are in 3rd through 5th.

C) Dog Gears would probably get annoying quickly, but it'd be fast, and reliable :). I don't know which I would rather have, a 6-speed non-DCCD JDM tranny, or a 5-speed dog-box. Both would cost about the same, but the dog-box would be more durable.

You'll tire quickly if it's your only car.

Nah, I don't think I would get tired of straight-cut gear-whine. Every time it'd get annoying, I'd just revel in the fact that my transmission is stronger than a standard helical cut 1st and 2nd gear. Plus, I'm only in 1st and 2nd until 30mph (in normal driving), and I am almost always going faster than 30mph in normal driving.

more than likely it's RFI whine being amplified through the speakers. that's why he hears it in the back. try turning the radio off to see if it goes away.

might try changing your spark plug wires. or checking where the wires go out of the radio, see what wires they cross or run along.

It would just sound more like a rally car to me :)

To properly analize this whine, Gravija needs to tell us what it's dependent on. If it's dependent on the speed of the car (continues to rise in pitch as the car accelerates) then it's tranny/diff related, or anything past the output shaft. If it's engine-speed related, it's probably the interference from the stereo Brat is talking about... Or a serious engine problem

I get RFI whine at 88.xmhz with the door open and the key "ON". The beep buzzes through the speakers. That's the only RFI noise I get.
