I used to see disguised prototypes all the time around Detroit. A lot of cars not sold here either, like new Lancias and Alfas.

Yeah, cicada cuisine has become really popular this time around, thanks to cooking in general being an "in thing." A cicada dish even almost made the DC Ritz-Carlton's menu this summer, but higher-ups vetoed it.

The nymphs are really soft and are supposed to have a very mild flavor that goes well with sauces. The soft-shelled adults (right after they molt) are supposed to be a lot like soft-shelled crabs. The adults are said to have a much more nutty flavor.

I haven't tried any yet though... maybe if they're still around when I get back to DC... My girlfriend's dog (a little Shih Tzu puppy) loves eating them but he gorges on them and gets sick.

The Washington Post made a special section on its web site about cicadas, and even scanned in some 17-year-old articles:

I haven't seen a single damn one of these flying little bastards. I saw a dead one at the tint shop today, but that's the first and only one I've seen. I've seen a bunch of gross and squished bugs though.

Ya, I started a job in Kensington ( I think thats what the area is called) and there are millions of 'em! They're all over, it's crazy. After a while it's start's sounding like they're in your head. Every now and then they drop on you and start flickin' their wings and crap.

I got back from NJ today and went to pick my sister up at her boyfriends house just outside Olney. Those bastards are LOUD and obnoxious. I hit like 8 of those damn things.

Still none around my house though.

About 2" long or so. I've hit a few, but not epidemic proportions that I was hearing about.
