CO2 INSTEAD OF WATER

Post by Legacytuner »

I WAS JUST THINKING INSTEAD OF USING WATER IN MY AWIC HOW ABOUT USING A CO2 SYSTEM TO TO SHOOT INSIDE THAT WAY THE IC REALLY IS A COOLER (FREEZER) AND I DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BUYING THE HEATEXCHANGER OR THE HARD TO FIND 2 SPEED ELECTRONIC WATER PUMP.THERE WOULD BE SIGNIFICANT GAINS

only good for bursts like nitrous. might as well get nitrous.

any turbine type water pump should work great. and heat exchangers can be any radiator that you can fit, i got mine for $17. you'll spend more on adapting a CO2 system than just doing it right.

CO2

Post by Legacytuner »

I WANT TO KEEP THE STOCK BOOST SETTINGS FOR DAILY DRIVING AND SHOOT THE C02 AT THE TRACK AND UP THE BOOST, THE CAR WOULD PERFORM NORMALLY WITH THE AIR GOING THRU THE UN COOLED IC, ILL HAVE TO GET A 2 STAGE BOOST CONTROLLER WITH NORMAL SETTINGS AND TRACK SETTINGS.

You could probably get similar gains from running an a>a i/c and shooting CO2 over the surfaces. Under normal driving circumstances, it would work like any other a>a i/c with the boost when you cool it with the CO2.

I don't think you can really run carbon dioxide (unless you used a very large amount of it) through the water passages of an air/water intercooler. If you want to use carbon dioxide I think you have to do what IronMonkeyL255 is suggesting.

They make C02 cooling systems for AAIC's. A company called CRYO2 makes them.

I'd rather use Nitrous than CO2 though. MUCH more efficient.

Why not use both? As stated above, CryO2 has some (rather expensive) systems to use CO2 to cool the air intake via a small bulb in the air path, as well as a fuel rail cooler, and finally out through an intercooler sprayer. Then add some nitrous and you've got one mean machine.

Of course... more boost added properly will just work all the time instead of the short bursts, and no refills are necessary......

I mean... we're already turbocharged. That's power anytime you wants it.

why not just use water, its easy to use and very cheap and efficient.

Free5t1le - I was saying to use Nitrous Oxide in place of CO2. It's much more efficient at cooling than CO2 is.

rsstiboy - Water has limited heat extracting ability that is well below that of CO2 and Nitrous. Heat is removed like a body sweats. The water absorbs heat and evaporates. The water does this well, but in the time it's on the cooler, it's already gone before fully evaporating. CO2 and Nitrous don't have this problem and cool on-contact. This makes them much more efficient for this application.

they also escape if someone lets the cap off the cooler, and how are you guys going to circulate the gases to keep them from heating up?

The gas exits the system at the intercooler. There is no recirculation. There is no cap to let off, I don't think you are understanding the system.

It's not an AWIC replaced with CO2. It's an AAIC that, instead of using water spray, uses CO2 or Nitrous.

I'm sorry. Nitrous should not be used to cool an intercooler except from the inside.

CO2 is cheaper and more readily available. Nitrous is a wee bit too much on the expensive side to be used simply for external cooling. Not to mention the additional power gains from allowing the nitrogen and oxygen to separate in the combustion chamber with the proper amount of additional fuel.

For the ultimate system, I still say run CO2 through the CryO2 intake bulb, then the fuel rail cooler, and then out onto the intercooler. Then have some nitrous spray in before the intercooler, cooling it more on its way to the engine. And for good measure you could also aim one of the windshield pissers onto the intercooler and hit it with that too.

And maybe raise the boost a lil bit. :D

Why not just pack the a/w intercooler with dry ice?

Jason - That would require re-packing more often than using a CRYO2 system I'd imagine.

Chris - I'll have to disagree. Nitrous isn't much more expensive (a 20oz bottle refil from Galyans will run around 20 bucks), and it's heat exchanging properties are much more appealing than CO2.

Yeah, but spraying nitrous outside isn't nearly as safe.

Meh, as soon as it hits the atmosphere, it'll dissipate and be harmless. No more dangerous than purging your nitrous, you just happen to be purging instead of injecting, and the purge just happens to be directed over the intercooler.

20oz co2 would be around $3, for the amount i'd want to use it, co2 would be much more economical.

this was what i thought was a revolutionary brainstorm
2 stage ebc 10 psi and somewhere around 16-18 psi
co2 passing through the (INSIDE) of the awic
20lb tank
ice cold baby burn all 4!

If I knew more about HVAC (which at some point I may bother to do) the A/C could be run through the AWIC's water tank to cool it for bursts.

$3? Damn. Paintball must be cheap in IL. It cost my buddy like $20 to fill his 20-oz tank.

Yeah Co2's very available and cheap here in FL due to all the paintball places around here. It's not that nitrous is dangerous to purge, I mean, that's part of a normal system anyway (and it looks friggin cool) - I just can't see using it outside the engine when it could do so much more inside. Then again, I'd probably never mess with it ont he Scooby since I know how addicting the bottle can be - I like the power to be there all the time without needing refills of any kind (well, except fuel... )

Although I suppose at some point we'd be pushing the EJ22T to its limits with external cooling being the only safe way to make more power.

I have no idea, I'm trying to make a case FOR nitrous cooling.

Chris - I'd much rather use nitrous to cool than to inject. Way to dangerous to spray without a really good fuel management setup.
