1987 Honda Civic AWD -Never

1985 VW GTi -Never

1992 VW GTi Rally car -Blew the engine during a rally, I was able to drive it back home but it died 400 feet outside my driveway

1985 VW Jetta -Never

1979 Volvo 242 GT -Never

1990 Legacy L- Twice, it was -35 outside, I was at work and the car would not start. I took off the battery, took it home (friend of mine picked me up) and let it warm. 4 hours later we were back at the car and it did started on the first try. The second time I was stranded was when a from CV axle broke in 2. Again, called the same friend and asked him to bring the tools. we got the CV axle back *in place, rally service style* with coat hangers and I drove it home. After that, I replaced the axle.

1991 Legacy Turbo - Twice in the same day, a hose going to my intake from my FMIC poped off *wather outside was about -30*.

I must say that I got stranded during rally event because I went off course and the spectators had to push me back on the road but that doesen't count does it?

Once with a dead battery in my driveway. After a jump all was well and we went on our way. One time I got some bad gas and I was never technically stranded but it did take a few minutes to get her started and running. Every now and then she gets tempermental and doesn't want to start on the first time but she eventually gives in and gets me where I'm going. All of these instances have happened in my driveway. Other than these few occasions shes the most reliable vehicle I know.

Once in a 76 AMC Matador about 15 years ago.
Again with my Trek 800 a couple of winters back on a ride. I rode 160 miles and had to get a ride home because of a swollen knee. What was I thinking?
By the way, since it was my knee, and not my mountain bike, does that really count?
My Subaru hasn't left me stranded though.
Things have broken though on other cars. For example, I've driven a few hundred miles home without clutches or even with the tranny stuck in 5th gear (I don't recommend taking off in 5th unless you have to).
I'm sure I've been able to get through situations that most people would be stranded in, whereas I'd be stuck in some of the ones you've described - such as having the guy in the back seat bounce around. A general knowledge of the car/bike/motorbike and how it works seems the best bet for avoiding being stranded. Things will wear and break regardless.
