Under the knife

Post by BAC5.2 »

Well, car is now in the shop. Dropped it off this afternoon. I'm hoping and wishing that it'll get done by Monday. As soon as it's done, I've gotta get it home, clean the shit out of it, wash it, fill it up, and then immediately leave for the beach.

Matt - Are you going to be in the area this weekend? I really want to finish my panel, but I don't have a car to fit it on :(.

I might sand it up, get it all ready, temporarly tack it in place, then go to the mechanics and do a test fit, lol. Then finish it up, spray it, and install it on Monday.

I really hope it gets done. Driving to the beach on the highway will be a great way to break in the clutch (right?).

With a lot of stopping and starting in rushour traffic, that clutch will get broken-in.

Yea, how are you supposed to break in a clutch? Highway or city driving? Which is better?

Considering it's completely disengaged when in gear (ie cruising) I'd think city driving would do a lot more to break it in. :P

Yes city driving helps. But, also... listen VERY closely to me on this. DONT TAKE IT ABOVE 4000 RPM. Higher rpms do put pressure on it somehow and definitely no fast shifting, power shifting, no granny shifting not double clutching like you should.

You seriously need to take it easy for the first 400-500 miles. It might be less for the organic disc. The clutch should have came with some warnings saying the same. How you treat the clutch in those first couple hundred miles determines the overall longevity of the clutch (weeks --> decade).

Nope, sorry I won't be. I'll be at STPR in Wellsboro! It's going to be kick ass, I can't wait. When do you leave for the beach?

Sorry I couldn't make it to help you guys tonight, I just now got home from work. Today was one of those days where nothing seemed to go right. :(

Well, the leaflet in the manual said the first 750 miles.

So I guess I should just take it real easy. Avoid hills and slipping the clutch and whatnot.

Would you suggest just being real careful on it? Shift like a grandma and avoid engine braking?

300 miles down to the beach, 300 miles back, mostly highway. That should break it in OK, right? I'll be cruising at 60/65 the whole way (cops).

AHH, it's gonna be so hard with the lightweight flywheel! I'm gonna wanna rev the hell out of it! Plus, it's car week. Everyone and their grandma is going to want to race me :(

Matt - No worries. I'll probably just sand it and go tomorrow to do a quick fit, then just finish it.

We didn't get much work done tonight. Apparently my impact wrench isn't as powerful as the industrial strength air gun that Jason used to permanently secure the camber links to the car. Might as well have welded the links on. My airgun makes 275 lb-ft, and it didn't budge the bolts at all. It sucked.

Really? That's lame. I hate it when I start rippin' into something and have to stop and put it all back together without accomplishing anything.

When do you get your car back?
