Looking for some A/C advise

Post by Legacy777 »

Ok......as some may know, my compressor crapped out, and I put a used one in I got from vrg3 and redid everything. Well it doesn't really seem to be cooling quite as well as the original did. I think it either could be that I don't have enough refrigerant in it. Or I almost suspect there may be air in the system. I don't think the guy pulled a vacuum on the system long enough.

But anyway. What I'm looking for is what others are seeing in the siteglass on the receiver/dryer. Mine sort of looks like a foamy mixture. I can see it speed up when I blip the throttle. However the way it should be is that I don't see hardly any bubbles, and maybe see a few when you blip the throttle. I don't know if I'm just looking at the siteglass wrong.....and that it's just normal.....or if it is a foamy mixture.

If it is actually a foamy mixture. It's either low on refrigerant.....or there's air in the system.

Anyone have any suggestions.....I may try and take a pic of it....if I do....I'll post.

TIA
Josh

I got some pics of the site glass.

Also got a set of gauges. With the a/c on full fan & max a/c. The low side is around 30 psi, & the high side is around 215 psi.

here's pics of the site glass

A foamy look is normal after a conversion to R134a....

I also have heard that if the compressor goes, you should replace the evaporator and some other stuff....that's what the shop did to mine... they wouldn't warranty it unless they replaced a certain list of other things, besides the compressor....

Hope that helps a little

That's just what my pretty reputable shop told me... I know there were a few things that needed to be replaced before they could warranty their work.

Yeah, I don't think you can usefully diagnose R-134a systems using the sight-glass; they look foamy a lot of the time even when working correctly.. The instructions that came with the OEM retrofit kit actually said to paint over the sight-glass with touch-up paint.

no shit!! haha.

Oh well....I guess I'll just leave it alone as long as it cools well.

The only odd thing it does if I leave it sit and idle for a while in the driveway with the ac on. Like when i was checking things out. If I turn the car off, but leave the key in the ACC position. The fans will still run. If I disconnect the plug from the pressure sensor, the fans turn off.

One of the guys I've been corresponding with said it's possible there's air or water in the system, and it's freezing up. He said to watch the temp of the vents and see if it goes up after a little bit of time. That would show that. Guess I need to buy a vent thermometer :)

I've bought everything to do this again myself except a vacuum pump. Which I may pickup anyway.
