Oil Filter?

What kind of oil filter do you use? The turbo is in desperate need of an oil change, and I've always used NAPA Gold filters, but all of the NAPA's in the area are now gone... any suggestions for filters?

Wow. I'm glad somone asked that question. I tend to be kinda geekish about certain things and oil, and oil filters are something I've looked into quite extensively.
Napa Gold oil filters are actually quite good in terms of filter media quality and overall filtration capacity (and ability).
It's too bad you aren't able to get them anymore. In any event, I have good news: The best all-around filter (in terms of maximum filtration -I don't have have the actual lab test results atm, but maybe I can link the info) is the Purolator Pureone. It has one of the highest overall filtration rates, multi-pass efficiency rating and the filter canister is also, very well made.
The only drawback to the Purolator PureOne, is that the filter media tends to break down rather quickly(i.e., after 3-4k you'll need to change it promptly). However, as long as you do regular oil changes, it's a non-issue.
I've tried the Napa Golds, K&N's (built like a fuckin' tank btw -reccomended if you do a lot of off-roading), Subaru OEM, and the Purolators.
The PureOnes are generally about $6.00-7.00 and the part number is:

i usually go 5-6k between oil changes as subaru recommends 7500, but if that's the best filter, then i might as well get a few of them. I work at Sears, and we sell them...

Are you running synth or dino? Going 7500 with dino (even the good shit), seems awfully long to go between changes. 5-6k between oil changes is prolly okay, but I'd do it every three if only for posterity.
I'm anal like that though. Regular oil and filter changes (with a high quality filter)are the single most important thing you can do to increase the longevity of your cars engine.
I may opt to try running Mobil 1 synthetic next oil change (my car doesn't leak a drop so I should be A-okay), but I've alway's used dino.
The results are negligable, but synthetic is generally better from the long term perspective.
In any event, git yerself some of them Purolator PureOnes. Your wagon will thank you

My car's lucky to get a change earlier than every 10k. I use Mobil 1 and have a nice set of leaks, so I put so much new shit in it over the course of things that its almost like an oil change every 5K. I would like to know what filter will last the longest, though. I've tried multiple kinds and have no isdea which is better. I just never get the cheap shit.

I had heard that the Fram ToughGuard is one of the best oil filters around.

And if one would like to keep the engine living the longest, an automotive engineer once said that it's also very important to change the air filter with each oil change (excluding K&N's A/F, of course).

I don't use a K&N filter. Had one on my modified VW Bug and it clogged the carbs.

Another friend of mine had it on his Volvo and had weird problems that the Volvo technicians couldn't fix. The friend of mind who's an exceptional troubleshooter finally figured it out. Although my friend had gotten rid of the K&N by that time he mentioned it in passing and the mechanic examined the air intake system and sure enough, the red oil had messed up the Volvo's sensors. After replacing the necessary parts, the Vovo ran like new.

Soooo, while I would like to use the K&N, I'm not 100% sold on its advertised effectiveness.

(I know a lot of you guys will probably disagree with me . . . but that's okay . . . )

Not to turn this thread into a debate on the efficacy or reliability of K&N filters, but it sounds like the Volvo owner had reoiled the filter way too much, which they warn about in the instructions. I've had mine for about 150k now without issues. Also had one on my '83 without a problem.

No, no debate intended. Probably the Volvo owner did over-oil his K&N; come to think of it, maybe I did too (I sometimes have the tendency to do things better than what's adequate or ideal thereby ruining what I'm doing).

Laurel, sorry to have sidetracked your thread.

(Although I'm a bit ignorant about the term "dino" that elkaboom used -- what is that? regular "petroleum" oil as in dino-saurs making it?)

Okay, any other observations about the best oil filters on the market?

Yup. . . I'm pretty sure he meant "dino-juice" which is what I usually end up saying. Easier than "regular oil", IMO.

I was just giving you guys shit about the sidetracking. It's not like what's being discussed isn't useful. . . therefor, how can one (such as me) really, in all fairness, bitch about it.

That's definitely something she doesn't need other people doing for her. She knows her shit, and she's always the first to admit when she doesn't.

Far as the thread hijacking goes, I'm never opposed to it when it concerns good conversation. On other boards, people will whore the hell out of threads just to increase their post counts.

A friend of mine years ago installed one of those toilet paper-in-cannister oil filters and loved it. I never tested it but if the paper disintegrates in oil like it does in water I think he'd be doing his engine a disservice.

I also recall that one mechanic told me that Purolator and Fram were the best on the market. But what got me (and I have no way of verifying it) is that he said one of the companies owned the other so they were essentially the same filter.

i went to work today, and they had like, every oil filter except the ones for the legacies....

SO i asked the auto guys about it, and the legacy driver pulled one from the back(they have them only for customers that purchase an oil change) and sold it to me for $2

That's when I switched to Fram. It was cheaper than Purolator. I'd buy 6 or more at a time when they were on sale. But that's when I'd change my oil every 1500 miles (car was used primarily in stop-and-go traffic).
