Post Dragon Update

Post by petridish38 »

WOW!! I had a pretty good time there! The scenery is beautiful, the weather was great, and the people were nice....

Me, my friend, and my girlfriend drove 9 hours to get there and camped out at the campgrounds there... it was nice!

I am disappointed though... We need more people to represent the first gen. legacy!!! It was just me and subyluvr, and we don't even have turbos....

I hit it off pretty well with the WRX guys... got some compliments on my car 8)

There were quite a few wrecks.... I saw most of the aftermath...

-An SVX with a WRX 5MT swap took a pretty bad spill :( (the driver is OK
-There was collision between a WRX and an STi (as far as I know the drivers are OK)
-A biker supposedly didn't make it past the first turn on the dragon (he died)
-Two 18-ish girls rolled their dad's miata over... I drove by shortly after it happened and heard music still playing in the car... I thought for sure that they were still in the car and dead, but I heard from NASIOC that they were for the most part OK.

There may have been more crashes that I am forgetting, but those should be it...

My car did great on the dragon!!! She made the 9 hour trip there and back great!!! It drove great on the dragon (for being a FWD NA) and I had a lot of fun driving it!

Pics!!

My car on top of the dragon!!!

This pic leaves a few cars out....(my g/f took it and the camera was still zoomed in a ways) there are two more XTs to the right and if you look real close, you can see me and subyluvr on the 2nd row from the back and 2nd and 3rd cars over (its hard to see)
Image

All in all there were about 50 Subarus there... Maybe one day we could have a meet of our own there!

I made it back alive!!!

I wish I could have gone. I might go next year, or maybe some time towards the end of the summer. I don't know the regulations on the dragon. I would have loved to have gone and represented the turbo BC's.

129/The Tail of the Dragon runs through Tennessee/North Carolina that contains 318 turns in 11 miles. It's the most challenging roadway in America, more so than the Nurburgring in Germany!

I had a simply awesome time. I went with the XT6 group, even though I took my Legacy. I'm glad I did now, because my little 4-cyl XT would be murder to make the trip and would be outclassed on the Dragon.

I pushed my car VERY hard on the Dragon, my goal was to keep up with the leading XT6 who has a fancy suspension setup on it, and I kept up with him very well. We were pushing so hard, sport bikes were slowing us down! I had my tires squealing in plenty of places, and I have also decided I won't drive the Dragon again unless I get some better brakes on my car. They didn't have the stopping power that I wanted, I almost peed my pants on one switchback when I stomped on them and instead just had to floor it through to pull through the turn.

My car didn't have one single problem the entire trip. Nothing. I didn't even lose any oil! I'm really proud of Patti :D

We lost an XT6 on the way back though. If you go to www.xt6.net you will see a tab called the "Diamond in the Rough" telling a story about how a board member picked up a very nice low-mileage XT6 with some front end damage for $137 and then put some junkyard body panels on it. That car broke its timing belt on I75 in Georgia about 5:30pm last night. After waiting an hour for the tow truck guy to take it to a Nissan dealer (the only import place in town  ) we made arrangements for them to fix it and got back on the road. I got back in Orlando past 1am last night

Still, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Great time, sweet cars, awesome road.

Subyluvr, I forgot you were from Orlando. It sucks because I was just there last month, doing the Universal Studios thing. If I would have remembered I could have finally got to meet someone from this board. Ah well, maybe next time.

Damn, I wish I could have made it! It looks like it was a blast. STPR was a lot of fun too though.

Hopefully next year we can get a mid-Atlantic caravan to head down there. =)

Remember how I said the paint was chipping off slowly? Well, I was washing it Thursday before the Dragon, and one humongous-ass chunk flew off the bumper, about 4 inches long. So I just thought to myself, f%$# it, I'm just gonna hose all the paint off the bumper. 5 minutes later, and about 5000 little pieces of paint on the driveway, and the bumper was black :D
