I was thinking of posting in kroner, but yes that's US. They all rust at the bottom. Luckily, underneath is usually fine.
I had my sills replaced by a body shop. They had to form everything. I don't know if you can get them easily. If you're thinking of doing the welding work, you can probably form a new one anyway.

I can get them for $80.00 (OEM too). I have the replacement fenders in my garage -just need to have them painted, and then I'm god to go.
I was quoted 120.00 from another source, but after placing a few calls, I was able to locate them much cheaper. They came primer black and identical to the originals.

What exactely do youmean by sills, Steve? Are you refering to the rockers maybe or am I just not familiar with the sills.
I'm curious, because my driver side rocker panel needs to be repaired (rear passenger, driver side). The panel is solid except for that one friggin spot -the very end, at the wheel well where it's rusted through.
I've been assuming it's gonna need to be professionally repaired, but so far have opted not to ask, for fear of what it'll cost me

Yeah, rocker panel. Mine rotted in the ame place. When they redid them, they got rid of that plastic painted part of the molding between the rear door and wheel well and reconstructed it in steel. It was more extensive than it looked (I find it always is) and that plus the wheel arches, new hood, all dents, several misc. rust spots and a whole paint job cost me $3k. I figure people spend more on that on health care for relatives who don't do much for them, the least I could do was take care of my beloved car. Hell, people spend more on pets.

Three grand doesn't seem bad at all considering what you had done. Hell, I was quoted 3k for a paintjob alone (granted it did include some minor body work). Sounds like a sweet deal. I should be so lucky...
Good point about health care for relatives -I have a fresh perspective on my asshole uncle now
.
Also, my cat Forest gets $75.00 worth of medicine every month -that's $900.00 bucks a year. I could have bought some WRX rims, new GR2's, aluminum endlinks, polyurethene bushings and a new windshield ornament for what it costs me to keep that goofy cat...
Oh well, he's a good little crap factory though.

I didn't necessarily mean to sound like I don't value animals. I'd rather spend money on an animal than most people. I love it when elephants get pissed and start stompin' humans, for instance.

The prices I quoted aren't from dealer -you'd have to be crazy or desperate to do that...
I called around and finally ended up getting the best prices from a auto-body and paint shop. Like they say in the commercial: Let your fingers do the walking.

I got the fender from a foreign auto parts place. The dealer (I asked just for laughs) told me he didn't think he could get them for a car that old and actually told me that it would cheaper to go somewhere else anyway.

There are two types OEM and aftermarket. They are both resonably priced an oem one is like 180 and aftermarket is around 130 or so. As for rocker panels they are alot more work. You can prolly get that at a dealer but its gonna be real expensive, and since its a part of the unibody its welded as a compenent of the chassis. just like a rear quarter or roof.

I'd say your prices may be specific to your region LegacyT. In my area, the highest price I got (I called 4 different shops) for OEM replacement fenders was $130.00 U.S. and the cheapest $80.00.
My advice is to grab the Yellow Pages, start making calls and ask some questions. Also, aftermarket replacement parts are often not as good as "stock" replacement parts. Body panels don't alway's match up or aren't manufactured to the same exacting standards as an OEM part.
Of course, that's not to say aftermarket parts are bad or anything, but hey, you get what you pay for...

So maybe I should just cut out the rocker (the rusted part) And then weld in new metal..???LegacyT wrote:There are two types OEM and aftermarket. Mark,
Are you planning on fabricating your own replacement sheet metal component? If so, I'd like to hear about the process involved and how it works out. I've considered going this route myself, but I know next to nothing about sheet metal fabrication. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, but make sure you close up the inner fender to rocker as sand and shit will get in there and rot it back out otherwise. I used fiberglass and Pour-15 inside the rockers with some grease to make further sure moisture doesn't bother it.
