Cookin' Wagon Tails

Post by G-reg »

I had a case of tinker-itis a few days ago and decided that changing a turn signal bulb wasn’t fun enough. Looking at my wagons tails it looked like there was just a little yellow lens for the turn signal….long story short I baked my tail lights and popped out the little lens with little drama. There are plenty of threads on head/tail baking so I’ll leave that alone, mine came apart fairly easily.

Nice.

Clear lenses and amber bulbs are better than clear bulbs with amber lenses. This way, the turn signals flash clear/amber/clear/amber instead of bright-amber/dim-amber/bright-amber/dim-amber.

The up close pic looks much nicer than the further away pic. Maybe it's just that in the further away pic, you can see the orange bulb inside. Either way, it looks good and still flashes orange :D

To make it look really slick, get a pair of Philips SilverVision bulbs:

They look chrome when they're not powered.

Yes. Do what vrg said. I was going to suggest the same, but I couldn't remember the name of the bulbs for the life of me.

I've never seen SilverVision's, just SilverStar's.

Either way, I plan on doing this pretty soon. Clear Sedan tails would = teh hotness.

Yeah I saw an ad for the silverstar ones in motortrend yesterday.

91White-T, how do you take the amber out of the tails on the sedan without baking?

Take the inside cover off then go at it with pliers. It'll take a lot of pulling, but they'll come out. There's these little tabs in there that if you can cut, make the orange come out easier.

I may try that later.

Can it be done with the lights on the car, or do they have to be removed to get at them?

I looked into the silvervisions, but they were $20.00+ for two…I don’t need 40.00 of turn signal bulbs. I was going to do your “rattle-can-special” Laurel, but I wanted to try this first. If I F-ed something up they would be probably be all red at the moment. IronMonkey, you’ve got to take them off the car, remove the bulbs and wiring, and cook at 225 for a few minutes and pull the lens off. If you do a search on one of those silly Impreza sights for baked turn signals you’ll find a bunch of stuff.

No.

Taillights need red lenses and retroreflectors for important safety reasons. Furthermore, there is no standards-compliant bulb that throws red light. This is true in almost every jurisdiction on the planet.
