Mine "Red line governs" at 138mph @6499 :-) Its nice to see a car that hits the highest number on the spedo. Our 04 Navigator's spedo goes to 140 and the thing tops out at 105. That pissed me off real bad. Full power up a steep hill gaining speed and then ..... Nothing.

Me too, I've had my 5mt 92 SS up to about 133-134 mph on two occasions. It was still accelerating too, although not real fast

Legacy777 wrote:No......you have no pre-defined speed limiter......what you do have is a drag vs. hp limiter.

The hp required to overcome the wind resistance at that speed was more then what your car had.
It felt like the car just hit a wall at 112 though. Just wouldn't accelerate anymore.

Well, I reviewed the C&D article for the Legacy on Dave's site, and it says nothing about electronic limiting, just that the top speed was 112mph.

So why does my brand-new-running car only go 112, and you guys are hitting 130? Mods perhaps (I have none)?

My car hit 133 on the speedo once and 120 several times later on (with nothing left). Now I think my top speed may be around that 112, but I don't really need to know.

I just hit 110 with no problem today coming home from the Woodburn drags. On a real clean stretch I dont expect hitting 125-130 to be much of a problem as I have hit 120 before and that was on my old WORN OUT AND SMOKIN engine. Man you should have seen the trail of smoke!

Just to revive.

My 95 didn't have a 113mph speed limiter. I hit 125, and ran out of steam. I routinely hit 115 on a flat stretch back-road. Only mod was a removed snorkus.

The fastest my SS has ever gone is 85mph :(. I was clutch limited, by the time I was at 85, the revs were climbing, but not the speedo.

I think a fair amount has to do with the total package....if you have no mods, and/or other issues that may be causing hp loss....you're not going to overcome the drag that's created at higher speeds. I believe drag/wind resistance increases exponentially with velocity....it's not linear.

I don't think my car would make it to 130 any more.....the tranny is poop....plus I think the motor has lost some of its "pep"

Hey all,

I need to revive this thread from the dead!

So I ran out to my moms today in Pendelton Oregon and it is about 210 miles from my place to hers. I was calculating the final top speed the wagon should supposedly be able to hit in 5th gear, as long as it actually had enough power to do so. Technically, it looks like around 160 mph would be top speed at redline in 5th (in a few posts in this thread it looks like others have calculated this as well).

Now that my speedo is VERY close to dead on (only off 1 or 2 % now versus the previous 10%, I can be sure that 70 mph is 70 and 100 mph is close to 100.

So I cruised at a stable 3000 rpm in fifth and was going about 72 mph. Then I bumped it quickly up to 4000 rpm and was cruising at about 97-98 mph. This is about a 25 mph increase per 1000 rpm. So 160 plus is about right on for 6500 rpm in 5th.

Now a few of you have actually redlined it in 5th but were nowhere near 160. Why is this? Gearing is gearing isn't it? If drag was keeping you at 135 mph, wouldnt 5th be stuck at 5250 k or so?

One of these days I will go for broke and test it. With the Supercharger I don't get any problems of boost spike or fuel cut off like the stock turboes do, and therefore also probably don't have a speed limiter. As it is, I have had the speedo up to 120 before the SC was installed, but the actual speed was only about 108 because the tires to speedo were wrong. I am now running on 16" WRX rims and Bridgestone Potenzas which allow me to actually say I am doing 100 mph and mean it.

My '93 SS doesnt have a speed limiter and i've buried the needle at 140 quite a few times.

When i had my '90 legacy L sedan i got it up to about 138 on the interstate in nebraska. I think the speedometer wasn't horribly accurate tho so probably around 130-135. After that, i never got it past 120. Might be because it had about 275,000 miles on it.

Speedometers get less and less accurate the faster and faster you go.

A friend of mine has an 03 WRX and has burried the needle many a time to 140+.

My question is, why are people going these astronomical speeds on RE92's?

Well I hit a "limit" today. On a section of paved farmroad, somewhere in a distant foriegn galaxy, I hit about 108 in fourth at a little over 5250 rpm. And then it stopped. But I also didnt have a chance to shift into fifth to see if it would start accellerating again. I suspect it should, but I also suspect that at that high an rpm in that high a gear, I am needing more gas than my 270 cc injectors can supply at 5psi of boost. I'll bet if I had off triggered my SC to turn the boost off, the car would have kept accellerating albeit at a lower pace because I wouldn have been messing with the AF ratio. Maybe.

I had a blast in some large flat sandlots as well. Doing huge flying donuts over and over. And no video camera. Durn. I got it spinning pretty good a few times. Someday I will be able to attempt it on wet grass and see if I can really get it spinning.

That's what I thought too, but either 1) there isn't and these cars just need room to stretch out and use every last ounce of horsepower or 2) all these people are talking a bunch of shit!

Mine won't do much more than 110, so mine does indeed reflect the 112-limit spec.

Mine does 110 even with the low compression engine and does it with ease. Do you have the floor mat stuck under the pedal?

Japanese cars are electronically limited to 112. This may have been cut for exported models. I've done 110 once or twice with oversized wheels and tires (so i was really going like 120) but i was running out of power so i didnt push it. Shrug.

Steve, I wasn't flooring it, and I was running out of room, but it at least didn't feel to me like there was much left in it. If I found a flatter highway with no fear of cops and mashed the gas to the floor, I might be able to get a few more mph out of it...

I think I have the power to fully experience everything the car has to potentially offer in terms of a speed limiter, and whether it's gear limited or not.

I can pull pretty easily to 100mph from about 60mph in 5th gear off-boost in a minimal stretch of road. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that I can clear the 140 mark, or higher without thousands of miles of straight road.

I did 133-134 on I-270 some years back and that was when I was stock. The old girl had more in her too but I got spooked about cops and shut her down.

Oh and for the haters, it was about 4 am on a 4 lane freeway without any traffic.
