How do I get the molding off??
I was wondering the easiest way to get the body molding off with out ruining it. Is it glued on or is it is it on there with little clips? Just wanted to know so I can start my body work.
Thanks, Joe
Thanks, Joe

The black molding with the chrome strip that runs around the whole car? If so then yes, IIRC it just clips in place.

You wont be able to get the molding off the bumpers as it's part of the bumper.

Thats cool thanks for your help. I am just real baffled here and wondering if there was a better way. We only took the one piece off the fender and got 2 broken clips so we stopped there. We want to paint the car but don't want to tape off all that molding. There is also some rust repair to do under one piece of molding.QuickDrive wrote:I honestly am not sure, I was just taking a stab at helping.

I popped them from the inside of the panel. You need a pair of pliers.

I've taken my moldings off and it was the worst thing i've done to my car, i wish i could have seen this post earlier so i could have warned you! they will NOT glue back on, the clips will most likely have to be replaced, that is, if your peices aren't bent like mine were, in which case, you'll have to spend upwards of $250 to get new ones with clips from the Stealership. Your best bet now is to fill in the pieces with something custom, or find a creative way to reinstall them. If you figure it out, let me know. I've been on this project for months, but hey, i repaired the rust underneath...

That (post above) was my revised plan post-moldings, so I've been looking into Bondo, etc for some kind of body filler. however, I've no experience, and no real time to do the body work, as it's my daily driver. However, if you remove those side panels, you need to beware that the rest of the car will still have those panels, so it's going to be blank and shaved in some spots and have the trim on the front and back bumpers... but it's a good look, I've done plenty of imagining, so I think the shaved look would be good if there was time to do it.. Good luck to you, turbonator, sorry you made the same mistake I did...

Body filler might never look perfectly straight in the light, but could work. You could also try it on the bumper molding, though you may want to shave them down a little with a belt sander or something first. I plan on doing this or cuttin them out completely and plastic welding a flat replacement strip in.

The more you remove the more you discover. Took off some molding and didn't break the clips. But when we took off the mudflaps there was more rust than originally thought. For sure need a passenger side front fender and now a drivers side mudflap. We also have to build a custom patch panel in the rocker on the driver side.

Mudflaps are actually completely reasonable from the dealer. I have the molded ones with SUBARU molded onto them.
