What kind of management would I need to run a IHI VF8?

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

The turbo is (supposedly) out of a '91 Legacy (Liberty?) RS. The seller says its a little bigger than a TD04.

I'm wondering what you WRX turbo people are running for management? Can the stock ECU handle this? Probably put a MBC on there, though.

the answer is yes, the OBD1 system the Legacy used is very adaptive to modifications. Even with an MBC it will run fine.

You'll be overrunning your fuel maps, and the ECU will be guessing at how much fuel to toss at the car.

I meant to go for a drive with Matt in his Legacy (@14psi) with the Computer hooked up and O2 sensor hooked up to see what fuel trims were looking like. Basically, at anything above 13psi, the ECU will richen out more than it would with proper maps, or at least I'd think it would.

Right, but too rich is bad for performance, but not damaging to the engine. Lean is better, but to lean and it's bad for performance AND it's bad for the engine (fuel starvation). A really really really good tune could net up to 80hp over stock engine management running Rich as Donald Trump.

It's also worth noting that ignition timing will be slightly off, since the stock ECU's ignition maps were designed with the stock turbo in mind.

Wait, isn't the VF8 SMALLER than the stock VF-11 (or VF-10 for those unlucky owners out there) that comes on the car?

I thought the IHI turbos were sized as larger = bigger (Like VF-22 powered WRX's = the hoss)?

It supposedly has a P18 exhaust housing. VFwhatever is the compressor size. I don't know what to make of it.

Well, if it's a VF-8 compressor, then that's STILL Smaller than stock.

I seem to remember the RS Liberty guys saying the VF8 was similar to the VF12... I don't think those numbers relate directly to compressor size.

I know a VF22 has a larger compressor than a VF23, for example.
