Wow, what's that!?
I was coming home from work today, and a BMW 323i and a MR2 Turbo were blocking my favorite turn on the way home from work. Posted speed limit is like 45, and I can hit 80 to 85 on it before squealing a tire.
These two were right next to eachother going about 60. Ruined my turn.
I was in the left lane, about to pass the BMW and the MR2 took off after the apex (I could have carried the speed he exited at, INTO the turn). The BMW followed suit, so I downshifted to 3rd and skipped my exit. I was about 3 cars back on the BMW.
It was like the BMW was standing still, shift to 4th and I was about 1/2 car ahead. I slowed down because of a car in front of me a few hundred yards up. I was gaining 1 car length about every 3 seconds or so, and he had it floored (loud as a son of a bitch). His passenger kept looking over trying to see my car, and the driver was doing the same.
BMW's 0. Turbo Legacy, 1.
I can't wait until next week. Maybe I'll catch the MR2 then...

Is that the turn we were on last night? It wasn't that MR2 TT that we were looking at was it?
If you think you're having fun now just wait until the mods start going in!

Nice, but those 323i's are dogs. Not to be a buzzkill, but I held around a MY 2000 up to the highest speed I've ever seen in my car and only dropped a car length. He had a few more MPH to go, but he wasn't pulling much and we both backed off. The look on his face was priceless. That was also 100k ago.
The MR2 on the other hand ... if it's a turbo, those things are quick.

Matt - Same exact one. Loud as a mother, and when he was in front of me I heard BOV in stereo
. Without a doubt, TT
Steve - I know they are dogs (although that was the third fastest, non M, E36 available when the E36's were big. The 325 (which I am also faster than) and the 328, are both faster than the 323). You said you dropped a car length, I gained almost 4 in the 10 seconds we were on it, and was DEFINATELY laying into it. This was an E36, so it was likely a 97-ish. Beating one of Germany's higher up models of "sports car" in both a turn (high speed right sweeper) and in a straight. Certain amount of pride comes with that.
I've got a feeling that my lightweight flywheel is partially responsible for my factory-freakness. Matt can attest, my car is quicker than your average bear. Not as fast as his yet, but it's faster than any other stock turbo Legacy I've driven.
I can't wait until next week man! I'm going to be ROCKING the bitches
. I can pretty much kiss 1st gear goodbye though
.
I might invest in a Turbosmart E-Boost controller if I can get a really good deal on one. It holds the wastegate completely shut until the desired boost is acheived. Talk about a FAST spool time!

If I can't afford stand alone right away, that's exactly the kind of boost control I'm looking for - what do they run? How does the flywheel affect engine braking? Since I bought an engine to an auto, I'm still tossing around the idea of getting a lighter flywheel since I need one anyway, but I'm a wuss when it comes to driveability compromises - there's only so much I'm willing to sacrifice, but if it's minimal, what the hell?

Engine braking is nonexistant. It slows from 80 to 75 just as fast in neutral as it does in 5th. I've stopped engine braking, and I just coast. Double clutching get's be back on the gas just as fast and just as smooth as with my old flywheel and clutch setup. Ask Matt how grabby my clutch is.
MSRP on the E-Boost is around $400. If there is a good bit of interest, I can setup a Group Buy and see what kind of pricing I can get.
Driving comprimises, it's a lot harder and you've got to be a lot more active in the shifting department with the light flywheel, the super stiff clutch, and the engine/tranny mounts. I'm still getting used to it, and my 1-2 shifts are about as clean as dirt, but my 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are butter. It's those 1-2 shifts that suck, and I think it's because my synchros are going. Under hard acceleration, if I don't double clutch into gear, I have to shift super slow (for that pace that is) and that throws my revs off. I don't usually rev match when hauling ass, so as the 2400 pound pressure plate snaps down on the clutch, I get a good bit of drivetrain lash.
I was shifting nice and clean today though, and knocked a pesky 04 Grand Prix GT out of the water. Granted those are heavy and slow, I'm proud as shit of my 10 year old car

Phil, get over here so I can kick your butt with my lightweight flywheel (and ummm... big muffler
)
With a little more boost you will be able to take out some big dog cars on the highway (with exhaust)... or at least they won't be able to pull on you. I will refrain from mentioning them here. A good idea is to keep your boost under fuel cut for now, but that is just my keep your engine running idealogy.
And you are wrong wrong wrong about the flywheel. Maybe your clutch is funky. I have absolutely no driveability issues with my flywheel, you are just used to really, really heavy flywheel cars obviously. And it is the low compression of the engine that prevents massive engine braking. A flywheel doesn't really affect that. Just keep downshifting and the car slows down, I can attest to that.

I'm used to heavy flywheels and slipping clutches. Engine braking is bad for gas mileage, so I don't do it, lol.

In the owners manual for my Ranger, it says engine braking is bad for gas mileage. I assumed that was a blanket thing.
