1990 GT turns over but wont start

Post by slyjonno »

Hi all, nice passionate forum. good to see..... first time poster.....just scored a 1990 Legacy gt s/w for cheapish, drove it for a week, installed an alarm, hooked up my stereo, drove it for two more weeks, then it stalled a couple of times on me, then next morning wouldnt start, turns over but no go. checked the ECU codes as per your forum, and CEL flashed constantly (no codes in memory?)
*Ive got spark at the ends of my HT leads
*Ive checked the fuel sending unit connectors
*Can hear the fuel pump on ignition

Any help would be greatly appreciated, before i start pulling things apart!

Welcome.

I thought the Legacy GT didn't have high tension leads -- isn't it coil-on-plug?

You have fuel in the tank, right? Can you hear the injectors open and close when cranking? A stethoscope would help with that, or a long screwdriver (you can listen through the handle).

Have you checked the spark plugs? Fuel filter?

yeh sorry wrong terminology, coil on plug it is.....
yep fuel in the tank. I will check the injectors, and pull out all the plugs next. The fuel filter is fully sealed however, all i can do is replace it i guess?
Suppose i could disconnect it and blow compressed air through it?
would this be bad?

Cheers

Yes, you can't service the fuel filter. Blowing compressed air through it probably wouldn't accomplish much.

But, if you don't know when it was last changed, it's probably a good idea to replace it.

ok pulled the plugs, and I could smell fuel on them so its not a fuel problem...replaced them all..... recieving spark......
so i decided to remove the air filter and air box....
Now Im no expert (by a long shot) but It had oil all through it from air flow sensor, to turbo charger. Cleaned it all out best i could, with rags, (dont have a kerosene bath). even the blow off valve was gunked up with oil (very hard to get out).
Well I put it all back together after roughly cleaning all parts, and it fired up bellowing smoke out the back.....I ran it up to running temp just sitting there, then checked the oil level which was a little bit above the top notch......So took it for a drive round the block and it stalled and wouldnt start again (same prob i guess) :(
(going to go clean it all out again now)

whats causing this???? overfilled oil??? someone said a piston ring may have gone??? (ive heard this can be terminal)

any input/help would be great

Cheers
