Replace steering rack

Post by THAWA »

I'm planning on eventually replacing my steering rack, should I just find a JY legacy rack, and swap that in, or should I look for a newer RS/WRX rack, or should I try to get a GT legacy rack like ciper? I read the thread about replacing the rack and ciper and vrg said the GT has a much quicker ratio, which is what I want, but will I have to replace the PS pump to match the line fittings? What about the track issues? I assume what with them being different lengths I'd have to do some kind of adjustment. Anyone think I could still get it in spec? (though I would assume so if ciper hasn't said anything about it)

I've been trying to get a straight answer on whether the 04 STi rack would bolt in. Or even better the 05 STi rack (4% quicker than the 04, the 05 WRX has the 04 STi rack). If the STi rack would bolt on, then that'd be the easiest and most direct bolt on.

I'd probably just go with the legacy GT rack. I don't think ciper mentioned anything about having to replace the pump....

I'm probably going to look into this as well.

I know the US-spec WRX rack doesn't bolt right into GC/GF Imprezas, so I'd be surprised if it bolted into BC/BFs. The spline count where it connected to the column was different, if I remember right. It might be possible to Frankenstein your old BC/BF rack with a WRX rack though.

wrx wagon racks bolt right in but the splines don't match, I managed to put one in my impreza but I changed the steering colun too (even more work) sti one will physically bolt in but you need to change the inner tie rods as sedans have a wider stance

911-t: Could you please qualify your post -- am I reading it right that the sti rack will fit right into the BC/BF, including matching splines?

The splines won't match. The STi rack bolts right into the WRX (see my above post, the 05 WRX's got the 04 STi rack). If the STi rack bolts into the WRX, and the WRX rack doesn't work in our cars, then by association, the STi rack won't line up.

Revlabs (I think) can re-work your stock steering rack for a super quick ratio. My buddy had his WRX rack done, and said lane changing on the highway was a wrist flick away. He loved it. Cost him $1300 though.

BAC5.2: Thanks 4 'splaining it to me. Got the picture now.

That steering rack re-work sounds great! Not the price tho.

Wouldn't replacing the spline end of the column with a compatible one be cheaper than reworking a rack?

98ish GT, and all 1st and 2nd gen legacies use the same part number except for the outback(not sure why), this is just for reman replacements tho, not dealer.

According to the catalogs at the auto parts store I work at.

So if ss and standard legacy racks are different from the factory, then dont expect it to be if you get a reman replacement at anywhere except the dealer, I'll try and call the dealer tomorrow and see if he has different part numbers.

There's no difference between turbo & non-turbo steering racks on the first gen Legacies. There is a different part # between the 90-92 MY's and the 93-94 MY's. However I couldn't tell you what the difference is.
