hehe are Subaru's great?????
At Thunderbird rally, I pulled a Golf GTI out of a ditch that a 4X4 truck couldnt pull out. Sheet ice, which is why the Golf went off in the first place.

I got an expedition stuck between two dirt hills. Pulled the front of the truck (spun it to the right slightly) then pulled on the back.

Second gear at a stand still creates good torque without spinning the wheels.

Do you guys use tow ropes or recovery straps? Every time I go to look at them, I'm confused by the difference. The recovery strap sounds like the one I should be buying, but there's only loops on the end, and I know at least my car doesn't have anything that will accept the loops. The tow strap has hooks that would work tho.

I carry a tow rope, it has metal hooks on each end and rated for 10,000 lbs.

I had a strap similar to Mark Ward and I also had a belt based come along. Ended up breaking the come along.

Straps/Ropes are better than chain because they are light and have some give, like a rubber band.

Until one breaks and snaps your head and one arm off. Chains are heavy and you have to be more careful not scratch of dent stuff, but that is definitely my preference. Straps are for tying a car down to a trailer and such, I would not use them to pull anything out. I've pulled plenty a vehicle out of crap with my 4wd Brat, all with a nice big chain. Off-road guys will laugh at you if you pull out a strap to pull something... it has happened to me. I showed them the two straps I had and the chain, they acted like I was idiot for even mentioning the straps.

P.S. - My great claim to fame is getting a full-size GMC Sierra w/ Z71 Offroad package unstuck. He high-sided his front end behind the front wheel 5 minutes after arriving. In front of him was dry ground, behind him slick muck... and that is the side he wanted to be pulled from. I got him out, but it would have been easier if his 4 wheel drive actually worked! GM does their 4 wheel drive AWD style with the computer trying to lock the diffs... and it wasn't doing it's job. Plus the truck wouldn't go into 4-wheel low. Took pics (he got pissed!) and afterwards he had to admit that he was impressed.

I still dont agree. Put a blanket on the end and it doesnt fly up. Even if the strap does brake and flys in an arc it wont damage the vehicle as much as a chain would.

Loosing body parts is not in the plan, what the hell are you doing outside the cabin anyways?!

All a chain is good for is bending things. When a vehicle is really stuck you cant use a chain for momentum pulls, where the slack is let out and you pull forward using the weight of the tow vehicle to get the other to move slightly. Do this with a chain and you'll shake the whole vehicle apart.

if that's the case, you shouldn't be trying to pull in the first place.

i'm done arguing :D. i prefer chains.

Maybe it's a local issue......I've done some fourbyin back in the day.....and all the people I've run into prefer ropes/straps.

Chains can f-stuff up BAD.......that includes people.

I prefer rope/strap.

Trust me, you can get straps that will hold up. I work in the natural gas pipeline business. During construction they hold the pipe with straps. These are probably beefier then your car straps....but I'm sure they are similar. I'm not talking small pipe either.......I'm talking 30" O.D. .375" wall and 40 ft joints.......and that's the small stuff. They use heavy wall pipe ( <= 0.50" wall) in the compressor stations and other areas where vibration is higher.
