Confirm: it was the solenoid purge valve
Replaced it with a new one and no CEL any more. Also cleared the codes and am left with only one: 21 temp sensor. Does this mean the fans will run all the time? They don't seem to so maybe it's an intermittent connection. Also the temp guage behaves normally, but perhaps that runs off a seperate sensor?
THanks to all.

A bad temperature sensor can cause problems starting (especially when cold), rough idles, and generally incorrect fuel mixtures.
The gauge operates from a separate sender unit that's mounted right next to the ECU's temperature sensor.
When the ECU is operating in "bad temp sensor" mode it will run the fans all the time too though, so maybe you do have an intermittent problem. It could be a wiring problem rather than a problem with the sensor itself.
So the CEL doesn't actually come on, but code 21 is stored in memory?
The sensor is pretty easy to replace and only lists for $25. It's part number 22630AA041. If you do decide to try replacing yours, I have a new unused sensor and gasket that you could have cheaper than a dealer would sell it for; PM me if you want it.

Ha! By George I think you've got it! Yes - CEL is not on at all, but....
Cold starting is as though there's not choke: revs and dies, revs and dies, pendulum swinging. Have to keep my foot a little in the throttle for 30s until it stabilizes. Probably the temp sensor?!
PMed you to buy yours. Thanks.

Me Too
When I ook my car to the mechanic, he said it was the purge thing as well. He said it would cost me $200 to replace. I smiled and walked out, warm in the knowledge that I will be fixing that one myself.
It's erect because he's blind

Not really that bad. Use a socket and extension to carefully hold the bolt in the new solenoid as you feed it below the intake. Took me about 20 mins.
Oh, on a turbo it's a PITA.

There was a post a while back were ciper thought he might have figured a way to do it, but he hadn't actually done it. He just had the plans to do it, I think.
I still haven't changed mine. It has been many months. hehe
It's just such a pain to get to on a turbo; that and I haven't made time. I have the new one sitting on my desk in front of my keyboard.

If you just want to get rid of the purge control valve CEL, you could just replace it with a resistor. A 200-ohm 1-watt resistor ought to work, I think. Wire it right where the solenoid goes, or between the ECU's purge control solenoid pin (cut the wire going into the rest of the harness) and ignition-switched +12v.

you'd probably get better responses on www.rslibertyclub.org than USMB There's quite a few people with second gens there
