Possibly A Sad Day

Post by MrBean85 »

My sister's 91 L sedan may be giving up the ghost or at least the transmission is. When the car is in "D" and you give it gas it acts like it has a stall converter on it and revs up to like 3 grand and then takes off. When it is in "1" and you give it gas it just sits there and will not move at all. Its been at the dealer for the last week or so and they've tried everything that they can think of and do and cannot solve the problem. The cheapest price on a new transmission they have is $2k not including labor.

Her car isn't all that bad looking with the "rims" that are on it and the body is in decent shape for the miles and age. But with 155k miles on it and the abuse it had from its prior owners, we may say good bye to it. In the last year the timing belt has been replaced, crank pulley, valve cover gaskets, and new ac compressor and conversion to r134. I'd love to see it fixed and back in the driveway again but my sister has never really "loved" it and she'd planned on getting something else within the next year or so.

So it looks like our stable will possibly loose one steed here shortly for something else :(

Sounds alot like what happend to me. Brought it to AMMCO and found out that the clutches were going or whatever. took $3k to fix it though, but my parents paid for it.

Find a beater with a good trans and swap it. Often times that will be cheaper then a used tranny.

That's one reason I always worry about AT's. How difficult is it really to swap one auto into another though?

We've looked everywhere for used transmissions. They're next to impossible to find around here. The same goes for a beater Legacy--people tend to drive their Subarus into the ground around here.

If hers cannot be fixed cheaply, we may have found another Sube to take its place, and she says that she likes this one. Its a 95 LS AWD sedan that can be had for probably $3000 or so.

I'd go with that option myself.
