Changing the filter screen

Does a routine changing of the tranny screen and fluid make any difference in operating performance? I've been told it's wise to do.

The internal transmission filter should NEVER be replaced. Depending on the last time you had a power flush I wouldn't recommend doing it.

Honestly I have no clue but if it's been a long time since the tranny fluid was replaced bits and pieces of it start to break off and it iwll start to slip or not shift, or seomthing, depending on the situation. The little bits and pieces keep it from becoming completely inoperable, and once you flush those bits and pieces the tranny doesnt work nearly as well. I know it's crazy and makes no sense but that's how i've been explained.

Read my post about swapping out the external filter, apparently a guy in Germany did or tried to replace his internal filter and now he has tranny issues...IIRC.

Oh..I was talking about the 1st gen 4EATs, the ones without the external filter.

Really, I didn't expect that answer. I'm not saying I don't believe what everyone is saying but it seems like somthing that should be done if it can. I don't believe I'll try it from the sounds of it but it would be cool to know more.

The first gen filter is mounted to the valve body. You need to remove a bunch of bolts and a transfer pipe. This all has to go back together correctly for your trans will not work. It's a pain but not hard if you take your time. Be sure to clean the inside of the pan, wipe the hole thing down. Another habit I have is after to replace the trans fluid unplug your spark plug wires and crank the motor for a few seconds to get the new fluid primed up.
