ECU Code 12

Post by lenm555 »

Need some help guys....
I have been trying to sold a hesitation problem for ages now where the power feels 'flat' sometimes when on boost. I took the car for a hard drive tonight and it was hesitating badly and then it decided it wouldn't boost above 8 psi.
I pulled over and did an ECU check and it came up with a code 12 (Starter Switch - Abnormal signal emitted from starter switch). How could that be associated with my hesitation problems?

The starter switch, I believe, is the line going to the ECU that tells it the starter is cranking the engine. I guess if that line is giving intermittently wrong readings (like it says you're cranking the engine when you're just driving normally), the ECU could start to act weird, but if it throws a CEL for the switch, it should start ignoring the starter switch line altogether, which could make the engine harder to start, but wouldn't cause weird drivability once the engine was running.

You may want to try clearing the code to see if it comes back.

Lots of us have hesitation problems to varying degrees; you could try searching for it. Some potential causes or aggravations include old alternators, old-style knock sensors, worn motor mounts, and dead oxygen sensors.

The older knock sensor design has been replaced. They crack, become oversensative and also the lead brake off.
